Philomel meets

The Philomel Club of Warren braved the snowy weather to enjoy its January musical program at the Woman’s Club of Warren. Members enjoyed a diversity of musical performance. Christine Kuntz, pianist, opened the program with a tribute to the iconic American composer Stephen Sondheim who died in November 2021 at the age of 91. Deena Winters performed performed “Tocatta” by the distinguished neo-Classical American composer, Robert Muczynski, changing moods from Muczynski’s to the familiar Franz Schubert. Rounding out her performance, Deena introduced our members to Frederic Mompou Dencausse, a Catalan composer best known for his piano “miniatures” and delicate, impressionistic style. Winters, Thomas Gaskin, and Dave Gaskin then performed the familiar and ever-beautiful Greensleeves as a flute, cello, and guitar trio. Greensleeves, a traditional English carol written in the 1500s, is more popularly known in modern times as the carol “What Child Is This.” Concluding the program, the club enjoyed a performance by a cello trio comprised of Thomas Gaskin, Mandy Andrews, and Chad Betts. Their first selection was a movement from Ludwig van Beethoven’s String Trio in C. Next, they performed a movement from Antonio Vivaldi’s Concerto in G minor for two cellos. Though most famous for his “Four Seasons” concerto, the Concerto for Two Cellos is immediately recognizable and familiar. The Philomel Club will meet on Wednesday, Feb. 9, at 1:30 p.m. at the Woman’s Club of Warren. Interested folks are welcome to attend and learn about the club. You do not need to be a musician to join. You must simply enjoy live musical performances.
