Johnny Appleseed
Festival
The Johnny Appleseed Festival committee is currently planning the 9th Annual Festival for the weekend of October 10, 11, and 12 and is in need of competition wood. Contact nathanwaterfield@yahoo.com if you have aspen as described in below.
The Johnny Appleseed Festival has very specific needs when selecting and preparing wood for its competition. In this part of the country the preferred species is big tooth or quaking aspen.
The trees need to be from 13 to 18 inches in diameter at breast height (DBH). The first 8 feet of the trees cannot be used because this wood is much firmer than the rest of the tree and also contains an abundance of hidden knots. Knots are a major problem for woodcutters due to their excessive hardness. They are to be avoided at all costs due to the competitive disadvantages they introduce as well as the potential for damage to expensive saws and axes. The trees that we look for typically come from within a stand of hardwood timber as opposed to low-lying areas next to streams or swamps which produce aspen that is generally more knotty.
Once the trees are felled they must be processed for competitive use. This involves cutting the timbers into 26″ lengths each with a minimum of 20″ of knot-free wood. Care must be taken to insure that the pieces that will be used for the different events come from the same trees to minimize variability and enhance competiveness. The individual pieces, of which there are between 280 and 320 are then put on a lathe to remove the bark and size them to specific diameters. These pieces are marked to identify the trees that they originated from and the events they are intended for. Finally, in order to maintain moisture content and keep the pieces free of dirt and other contaminants, they are wrapped in plastic sheeting until the day of the competition.
Last year it took approximately 40 mature trees (4,500 bdft) to produce the wood for the competition. Each year the Johnny Appleseed Festival has been generously supported by having the wood donated by local loggers and landowners. Finally, it takes a lot of hard work each year to process the wood. All of this labor is provided by a group of volunteers who donate their time and equipment over a two-day period. Without their efforts this competition would not be possible.

Main Street Artisans
The monthly meeting of the Main Street Artisans took place at the co-op with all artisans present with exception of Sue Curtin, who sells jams and jellies.
The artisans stated that the new way in which the shop is set up seems to be working well. Shoppers seem to flow within the shop. The shop is still open at its location at 29 South Main Street with the same hours. It is only open on one side now.
The co-op could not afford to keep both sides open, so they closed the side towards the Pharmacy and moved everything into one side. All the artists have plenty of space for the collection of their fineries. The artists and what they specialize in are as follows: Janice Lyle, Fiber Artist, Randy Melquist, Glass Art, Donna Anderson, Jewelry Designer, Marilyn Dunkle, Watercolors, Evelyn McNeal, Oils, Melody Mead, Acrylics, Bill Simbeck, Photographer, Shirley Corelli, Handmade scented candles, soaps, etc, Leon Edmiston, Intersia, Jenelle Johnson, Furniture Restoration, Nancy Edmiston, Baker, Sandy Droney, Fiber Artist, Bruce Melquist, Wood Turning, Paul Yourschisin, Scroll Saw Art, Sue Curtain, Exceptional Cook, Cathy Peterson, Fiber Artist.
The co-op is always looking for new artists. Applications and the bylaws of the co-op are available. Presently they are looking for a woodworker, potter, glassware artist, leathersmith or perhaps ceramic artist. The April raffle is a hand-painted pitcher painted by Marilyn Dunkle, full of Easter candy and a stuffed bunny. The shop is open Wednesday-Friday from 11 a.m. 6 pm., Saturday 9 a.m. 5 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m.-5 p.m.
