Cadette Girl Scout

Troop Project

Come join us to put together your own Front Porch Planter that you can take home and watch grow, brought to you by Cadette Girl Scout Troop 30699.

Front Porch Planters is a box gardening project developed by Youngsville Girl Scouts in the “Challenge & Change: Challenge Yourself, Change the World” program.

Girls identified a need in our community for healthy, home-grown foods. Our mission is to make a healthy community by giving planter boxes to the people in the Youngsville community so they can grow healthy foods.

Members of the Youngsville/Pittsfield communities will be able to plant their own vegetable garden and take it home.

These planter boxes are made out of cedar and are designed so you can grow a vegetable garden right on your front porch year after year!

Boxes, soil, plants and watering can will be provided. This is a free (but limited) offer that’s worth over $20. Limit one box per household. Participants will be asked to complete a pre- and post- survey. This program is funded by a USDA grant. Donations are accepted to continue to fund this project in the future, but are not necessary.

It will be held Saturday, June 8, from 9 a.m. to noon at Youngsville Agway.

Update on Emily

This is an update on seven-year-old Emily Melish and her bracelet project. Emily is the little girl who was born with Spina Bifida, scoliosis, a severely constricted left leg and a spirit that inspires everyone around her.

In April she underwent her 17th surgery via the Shriner’s Hospital system. That surgery was to replace the rod in her back with a longer one that can be lengthened as she grows. She is recovering nicely.

The Shriners pay the total cost for all the children who come to them with orthopedic, clef pallet, cerebral palsy, or severe burn issues. Last July, Emily came up with the idea to make and sell beaded bracelets. She wanted to give back to the Shriners so they could help more children like her. Since that time, the idea has taken wings. Everyone wants to help her. With a little help from her friends, over $13,000 has been donated to the Erie unit of the Shriner’s Hospital.

Three of those helpers are from Youngsville Elementary Middle School. When Anika and Reagan Chase heard Emily’s story at church, they wanted to help by making some bracelets and selling them to friends at school.

They enlisted the help of their friend Kinsey Olewine and presented their plan to teachers and principal for suggestions and approval. They reached their first goal quickly so they kept moving the goal up until they reached their self-set deadline. The girls didn’t stop there as they planned a presentation ceremony at church to present $350 to Mr. and Mrs. Oviatt, who represent the project in the Warren Area.

Their teacher and principle attended. Mrs. Oviatt said, “It is a great day when we can celebrate our children and an even greater day when they inspire us with their caring, compassion, and call to action.”

Other returning members who took part in the program were Nanette Knappenberger (Kent’s wife, not a former member) and Gerri Miller Lyter, vocal soloists. The individuals of the bell choir included Grace Miller Backstrom, Deanne Culbertson Gaton, Nanette Knappenberger, Gerri Miller Lyter, Robin Culbertson Rain, Kristin Manelick Truesdate, Karen Jewell Yourchisin, and Elsa Manelick. Unable to attend due to health issues were Melanie Chapel Brush and Pam Ward Hummel.

The Han family (former pastor) from Albion shared with numbers on the cello and violin, played by Kyu Hyek and Kyu Hyung, respectively. Their mother, Eun Young, was the pianist.

The closing music, “The Lord’s Prayer”, was provided on a CD by Don Walters, who composed and directed the piece. He was also in attendance.

Youngsville Library

Unique Display

The imaginative “Paper World” created by David Smith is on display at the Youngsville Public Library from now until Friday, May 10.

David recycles cereal boxes, water bottle caps, and other materials to create his own models of planes, tanks, cars, or whatever else he fancies. What is particularly amazing is that even though David is legally blind he creates these items without the use of any pre-fab model kits.

Due to use of an intricate magnification system, David makes sure that each of his creations still has tremendous detail. Stop in during business hours to see the display: Monday and Tuesday, noon to 7:30 p.m; Wednesday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Friday noon to 4 p.m.

Youngsville Public

Library part of

WarrenGives

Youngsville Public Library has been chosen by the Warren Community Foundation to participate in the WarrenGives fundraising campaign scheduled for May 8. WarrenGives is a 12-hour online donation event hosted by the Community Foundation of Warren County. On Wednesday, May 8 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. the WarrenGives website will be open for donors to give electronically at www.warrengives.org.

Youngsville Public Library will be open special hours on Wednesday, May 8 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and members of the Friends of the Youngsville Library will be stationed at three public computers with internet access to assist donors throughout the day.

“This is a really unique fundraising opportunity for our library,” said Library Friends President Evelyn Stufflebeam. “What is especially great is that in addition to the money directly donated to the Youngsville Library on May 8th, the (Warren Community) Foundation will also give a percentage match. Also, by staying open for extended hours on Wednesday and offering computer assistance, the Board and Friends hope to both increase donation participation for our library and to target patrons who either do not have computer access at home or are not computer savvy.”

For any questions, call the library 563-7670.

Water Lines

and ROY’s Funding

In ongoing efforts to raise funds to benefit the community of Youngsville, the Revitalization Of Youngsville Association, with help, has worked hard from 2004. It has been challenging to locate money needed to replace aging water and sewer lines. This last month, Youngsville has been offered an incredible opportunity to generate the funds needed. Yet, it will take your support. If 800 people contribute $25 each then it will mean $20,000 can go toward new sewer and water lines on East Main Street. Plus the Community Foundation of Warren County has promised to add to our donations.

Youngsville was founded by Matthew Young in 1813 and incorporated in 1850. Then, between 1900 and 1920, water pipes were laid. Around 1936, during the Depression, sewer lines were laid. As our community aged so did the things that keep our people safe. Our infrastructure has been declining now for 100 years.

Earl Wilcox, Youngsville’s Public Works foreman of 35 years, said “The lines are old. They haven’t been replaced since I’ve been here. The water comes from the reservoir on York Hill and one-third of the town’s water runs through its center.”

“Most pipes are made of old cast iron which are brittle and easily broken. Our community is unable to replace the old pipes due to the expense of constant repair. Our goal is to purchase pipes designed with the newest technology: ductile iron. This stronger more flexible material will eliminate the need for constant repair and save thousands of dollars in annual repairs and water leakage,” Borough Manager Lisa Hagberg said. “We don’t want to be working under crisis management. We want to fix it before we have it break.”

We are asking you, for the greater good, to donate so that Youngsville gets this match. Donate online at WarrenGives.org on May 8; search for Revitalization Of Youngsville Community Fund, click the donate button and use a Mastercard or Visa and follow directions to make a secure donation.
