Jim Bryerton Benefit

There will be a benefit Spaghetti Dinner at the Sugar Grove Fire Hall on April 27th from 4 8 p.m. There will be live entertainment, a Chinese Auction, a Live Auction and a 50/50 raffle. Jim was a member of the Sugar Grove Community for many years and bravely lost his battle to cancer on March 18, 2013. This benefit will assist his family, wife Laurie Bryerton and children Adrienne, Jesse, Jordan and Corey. Please plan to come out and support Jim’s family the same way he supported many in our community

Benefit dinner

The Hessel Valley Lutheran Church in Chandlers Valley will host a benefit dinner for Bob Collman on Thursday, May 2, from 4:30 – 6:30 p.m. The price is only a donation and takeouts will be available. Collman is an electrician who has been recovering from a catastrophic health crisis since February and is currently at Warren Manor. His inability to work and inadequate insurance for the massive hospital bills have created another crisis for him and his wife Sharon.

SGES Ice Cream Social

The Sugar Grove Elementary School Annual Auction and Ice Cream Social was held last night. The proceeds from this event each year go to benefit the SGES students. This annual event has always been a lot of fun and well attended by the community.

2013-2014 SGES CPT

The Sugar Grove Elementary School CPT (Concerned Parent Teachers Organization) is taking applications from individuals interested in serving as an officer for the coming school year. If you are interested, you can pick up a application at the Sugar Grove Elementary School office.

Community Lunch

The Community Lunches in the area continue to be well attended. All lunches begin at 11:30 a.m. Everyone is invited to attend one of the area Community lunches. Each month lunch is held on the 1st Friday of the month which will be May 3rd at the Mission Covenant Church at the corner of Matthews Run and Jackson Run Road. On the second Thursday of each month, which will be May 9, at the Sugar Grove United Methodist Church located at the corner of Race Street and Jamestown Street in the center of town. On the third Wednesday of the month, which will be May 15, at the Hessel Valley Lutheran Church located in Chandlers Valley. Everyone is invited to attend.

Truck Load

The Eisenhower High School Band Boosters are selling “A Truck Load of Groceries” raffle tickets. Tickets are $2 each or 3 for $5. Contact any band booster member or Mr. Napolitan if you are interested in purchasing tickets and help support our excellent Eisenhower Knights Musicians.

National Library Week

The We are Bookin Fun Run Walk was well-attended in spite of the cool weather. Overall male and female winners were Clint Moore with a time of 23:17 and Julia Bauer with a time of 22:28. Other category winners and honorable mentions went to: Female ages 19-29 category Kate Borland 31:05, Sarah Rice 34:19,Jessica Todd 58 and Tamara Pudder 58. Female 30-39 category Sarah Frederick 26:42, Netta Lindell 27:38, Maggie Smith 30:15, Erica Cole 32:04, and Missy Becker 33:22. Female 40-49 category Candy Chase 29:56, Janis Bennett 33:38, Kim McNutt 49:07, Marcy Hunter 58, and Jeanette Walter 58. Sugar Grove Gives

There is a one-day donation event happening at the Sugar Grove Free Library. It is in cooperation with the Warren County Community Foundation’s matching Grant Warren/Gives event. The library will be open from 8 a.m. 8 p.m. on May 8. The library will be offering coffee and donuts in the morning as well as hot dogs, chips, and homemade desserts thought he lunch and dinner hours. Eat there or take it to go. All you need to do is make a donation. All donations will benefit the library and the community foundation will match a percentage of all the donations made to the library. Remember this is only a 12-hour event.

SG Book Club News

For those interested in being a part of the Sugar Grove Free Library Book Club, they have a new book each month. Anyone can obtain a copy of Stones from the River by Ursala Hegi. We will meet to discuss this book April 29th at the Library.

This is the story of a young dwarf girl who grows up during the rise of Nazism in Germany. Brush up on your German as there could be some German vocabulary in the book club selection. For more information on the Book Club, contact the local library.

Food distribution

The Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwestern Pennsylvania delivered the Mobile Food Pantry to the Sugar Grove Free Methodist Church, 210 Jamestown Street in Sugar Grove on Saturday, April 20. Doors opened at 8 am and by noon more than 167 families had each received a donation of 128 pounds of food. The local volunteers unloaded, organized and then distributed close to 20,000 pounds of food in the 4 hour period. Just a reminder the local Sugar Grove Food Pantry is open every third Wednesday of the month at the Sugar Grove Free Methodist Church from 6-8 p.m.

Sugar Grove meetings

The Sugar Grove Borough Council meeting will be Monday, May 6, at 7 p.m. in the Sugar Grove borough building. The Sugar Grove Township meeting will be held at 8 p.m. on May 7 in the Sugar Grove Township Buildings. The general public is invited to attend.

We Are Bookin’

The Sugar Grove Free Library will be holding their 3rd Annual We are Bookin’ 5K and 1 mile fun race on Saturday.

The race will begin and end at the Sugar Grove Free Library with a start time of 10 a.m. Registration is open now for anyone wishing to take part in the event. Forms can be obtained at the Sugar Grove Free Library.

The age groups for the event will be 18 and under, 19-29, 30-39, 40-49 and 50 plus. The first male and female overall winners and the top three male and female runners in each age group will be awarded No awards will be presented in the fun run/walk but all those under 12 will receive a participation certificate or ribbon. The cost to take part in the 5K is $20. The cost to take part in the 1 mile fun run/walk is $15. There will be event-day registration at the Library from 9-9:30 a.m.

SGES Art Show

and Choir Concert

The Sugar Grove Elementary School held their Spring Choir Concert and Art Show on Thursday, April 11th. The students in grades 1 through 5 will be presented a 30 minute concert twice during the evening at 6:30 and at 7 pm Families also enjoyed the art work presented by the students of the school. Thank you to all who helped make this evening possible. Our SGES choir is under the direction of our Music Teacher, Denise Pearson, and our Art Show has been coordinated by our Art Teacher Jessica Shoemaker

SGES Ice Cream Social

The Sugar Grove Elementary School CPT will be holding its annual Choice Auction and Ice Cream Social on Thursday, April 25. The proceeds from this event each year go to benefit the SGES students. This annual event is a lot of fun and well attended in our community.

The Choice Auction has donated items sold through a ticket raffle. Anyone can buy chances on items. In order for this event to be successful, they would greatly appreciate any donation you might be able to make. Are you a great cook, love to make crafts or good at woodworking? Then they need you to donate your special items. Past donations have been baked breads, pies, candies, craft items, new apparel, toys, games, gift certificates, even cash and gas. The ideas are limitless. The more donations we receive the more ticket that will be sold to benefit our school. SGES School Pictures

The Sugar Grove Elementary School will be having their spring school pictures taken on Thursday, April 18th. Get out your favorite outfit and be ready to smile for your spring class pictures.

CVCC Auction

The Chandlers Valley Community Center will be holding an auction on April 18th at 6 p.m. There will be a truck of merchandise to auction and doors will open at 6 p.m.

Hunger Games

The Sugar Grove Library and the Sugar Grove Community is working to plan a unique event never done before in Warren County.

The first Sugar Grove Library Hunger games with a twist will be happening Saturday, June 1. It will be a community street fair that will involve good clean fun competitions and will provide nonperishable food items to fill the local food banks.

This event will not only raise funds for the local library, it will assist in replenishing the area food banks. Local businesses are encouraged now to get in on the fun. Vendor forms are now available at the Sugar Grove Library. There are spots for craft and food vendors to be at the event. There will be no alcohol, tobacco or gun sales. If you would like to volunteer to be on the set up crew, take down crew or score keeper you can also contact the library.

Watch for more information on the numerous fun activities at the First Annual Sugar Grove Hunger games. There will be rock climbing, bungee running, archery, obstacle courses, races geo cashing, laser tag, hoop shoots, baseball throws, and more and it will all be happening in the streets of Sugar Grove. There will be events for the younger crowd as well including a magic show, games, and crafts.

Donation to library

The American Legion Post #758 recently gave the Sugar Grove Library $4000 to assist with their events. The Sugar Grove Library’s board of Directors is responsible for the fiscal well-being of the library and they take that responsibility seriously in the stressed economy.

As a direct result of state budget cuts and a down-turned economy the library is much more proactive in creating events that not only augment the library’s need for annual sustainable fundraising but also establish a venue for the library to give back to our local community.

Librarian Kim Wilson stated, “On behalf of the Board and the over 5,000 people they we serve, we would like to thank the American Legion Post #758 for the $4,000 donation and the help that it give us by allowing us to continue to reach all goals.”

Legion Luck Shoot

The American Legion Post #758 is hosting a Spring Luck Shoot on April 14. The event will begin at noon and run until 5 p.m. Prizes will include steaks, ham, turkey and pies. There will also be a raffle drawing for a rifle on that day. Tickets are available for purchase now and the winner will be drawn on that day. This event is open to all the general public. First Day of Fishing

The Lottsville United Methodist Church will celebrate the First Day of Fishing by hosting a Pancake Breakfast on Saturday. The Breakfast will begin at 7 a.m. and run until 11 a.m. There will be pancakes, fresh sausage, juice, eggs and homemade fruit pies will be served to all our hungry fishermen for a donation. Even if you are not planning to rise early and get out fishing, come over and enjoy the breakfast. All are welcome.

Glory Way Concert

The Lottsville United Methodist Church will welcome “GLORY WAY”, A quartet from near Youngstown, Ohio for a concert on Sunday, April 14th. The concert will begin at 6:00 p.m. A donation will be collected to support their mission and future concerts. Come and enjoy a Sunday evening filled with Christian music.

Chorus Fest

Sugar Grove Elementary School and the Eisenhower High School are both sending a group of their students to Fort LeBoeuf High School on Friday, April 5, to participate in the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association Chorus Fest.

Congratulations to SGES fourth- and fifth-grade students selected to attend this event. They are Aubrey Younger, Destiny Snook, Amber Penley, Heather Sydlik, Michelle Kingsley, Ashley Hall, Logan Greene and Morgan Kellogg.

Also congratulations to EMHS sixth-grade students Victoria Carlton, Grace Larson, Shannon Kellogg, Rachel Dietsch Matthew Vibbert, William Howell, Jared Younger, and Carter Knapp.

Both groups will join with students from throughout the area for a day of singing and fun and then present a concert.

SGES Art Show

Turkey Party The Sugar Grove Volunteer Fire Department will host a Turkey and Gun Party on April 6 at 7 p.m. at the Fire Hall. Come out this event and help as the proceeds will support the Eisenhower Wrestling Team.
