WAHS evacuated after gas leak; school reopened in afternoon

A gas leak in the lower portion of Warren Area High School led to an evacuation of the school building Thursday.

Fifteen students and an adult were taken to the Warren General Hospital emergency room for further evaluation.

Gary Weber, Warren County School District superintendent, said WAHS buildings and grounds staff were notified Thursday of a gas odor in the lower portion of the high school, with staff smelling a strong odor of gas in the classroom where the issue was first reported.

“Out of an abundance of caution, building administration made the decision to immediately evacuate the entire building, and the gas service was shut off,” Weber said in a statement.
