Higher river levels expected as Kinzua Dam increases water releases
Officials announced that significant increases in water outflow from Kinzua Dam were planned for Tuesday, due to the weekend’s large amount of rainfall and melted snow.
According to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the increased releases may cause substantial rises in water levels below the dam over the coming days.
Boaters, anglers and others who use the river are urged to exercise caution and remain alert to changing conditions.
“The water will be high and running fast,” said Doug Helman, resource manager of the Kinzua Dam. “We want to ensure people do not capsize or get swept away.”
To reduce the risk of sudden level rises, dam operators said gate openings were spaced out over several hours. This approach manages the flow more gradually and helps limit abrupt increases in river levels.
