Unemployment down slightly in February

Unemployment in Warren County was down slightly in February, but still higher that it typically was pre-pandemic.

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry, the county’s unemployment rate was 7.5 percent. That’s down from 7.8 percent in January. Still, unemployment is higher than the 6.3 percent rate in December 2020, and the 5.3 percent of February 2020.

The department attributed the decrease from January to an increase in service-sector jobs — in particular in local government.

Compared to one year before, almost all job sectors – with the exception of government — were down.

The improvement over January moved the county into the most favorable rate in the region and closer to the state-wide rate.

Bradford had the second lowest rate in the region at 7.8 percent, followed by Meadville (8.2 percent), Oil City (8.4 percent) and Erie (8.8 percent). Forest County had the highest unemployment rate in the region at 9.5 percent.

The state-wide unemployment rate was 7.3 while the national rate was 6.2 percent.
