Pittsfield man charged in alleged assault of child

A Pittsfield man has been charged with sexual assault of a young girl.

James R. Owen, 21, of Barton Run Road, is charged with involuntary deviate sexual intercourse with child and aggravated indecent assault of child.

The charges relate to an alleged incident from between 2013 and 2015 involving a girl who was between 4 and 6 years old.

The alleged victim told police that she was playing hide and seek with a group of friends when Owen suggested they hide in a shed.

She said Owen pulled his pants down and that, “it wasn’t exactly rape.”

She described him touching her, according to the affidavit.

Asked by officials what caused the incident to stop, the alleged victim said there were someone nearby, according to the affidavit. She said Owens told her not to tell anyone what he had done.

Owen was interviewed in January.

According to police, he said he moved into the home in 2015 and remembers the alleged victim visiting. He told police he was never alone with the girl and denied having any sexual contact with her.

Owen was arraigned Wednesday before District Justice Todd Woodin and released on $50,000 unsecured bail.

A preliminary hearing is set for 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 13.
