Inmate charged with damaging window

An inmate awaiting trial on charges related to an alleged stabbing faces additional charges after breaking a window at Warren County jail.

Charles R. Earls III, 23, of Spartansburg, is charged with institutional vandalism, criminal mischief, and disorderly conduct.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, Earls threw soapy water onto a camera at the jail in at attempt “to cover the lens.”

That didn’t work, apparently, because police went on to describe his alleged subsequent actions caught on video.

“Earls can be seen hitting a window with a wooden handle for a broom or mop,” according to the affidavit. “Earls hits the window multiple times, pauses to check that the camera is still covered, then hit the glass several more times.”

The damage to the window was estimated at $700, according to the affidavit.

Earls was accused of stabbing a man in Pittsfield Township and charged with aggravated assault in October.

Separate dates for a settlement conference and calendar call are scheduled for April.
