Sugar Grove home gutted in fire

Two Sugar Grove residents are staying with family after a Wednesday afternoon fire destroyed their home.

According to Sugar Grove Volunteer Fire Department Captain Justin Darr, no one was home at the time of the fire 270 Cross Road, which was first reported just before 3 p.m.

When firefighters arrived at the scene, the garage and house were already well involved, Darr said, and he suspects the house is a total loss.

“We believe it was a chimney fire that extended into the structure,” he said. “It started in the garage and moved to the house.”

Two dogs that were inside at the time of the fire were not able to escape and died as a result of the fire, Darr said.

The department, with assistance from the departments in Lander, Wrightsville, Bear Lake, Youngsville, Spring Creek, Busti and Lakewood, set up for water supply from Stillwater Road, Darr said. Four engines and numerous tankers and heavy rescues responded to the scene.

Darr said he believes the house was insured and that the residents, who he did not identify, are staying with local family.
