City man accused of rape released on bail

A Warren man accused of repeatedly raping a young girl has been released on bail.

Richard D. Barrett, 54, of Conewango Avenue Extension, is charged with rape of a child, statutory sexual assault, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse with a child, sexual assault, aggravated indecent assault – complainant less than 13 years of age, indecent assault — complainant less than 13 years of age, two counts of corruption of minors, and indecent exposure.

He was arraigned before District Judge Laura Bauer on Wednesday and taken to Warren County jail after failing to post $250,000 bail.

According to court documents, Barrett made bail on Thursday and was released.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, the alleged victim, who was less than 10 years old at the time of the alleged assaults, said Barrett raped her multiple times on the dirt floor of a barn-like structure on Barrett’s property.

Barrett is listed on the Pennsylvania Sexual Offender Registry for a February 1996 conviction in Florida for sexual battery of a child.

Barrett has also been charged with three counts of endangering the welfare of children — including a first-degree felony — in an August incident in the county in which a two-year-old child drowned.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 27.
