The Philomel Club of Warren opened its 135th season at the Woman's Club of Warren earlier this month. The program was titled "President's Surprise." Guest artist Matthew Robinson, provided an immersive performance on the concert grand piano. Robinson, a self-taught pianist, who plays by ear, performed several popular classics, including "Moon River", "Autumn Leaves", and "Rainbow Connection." He shares his gift of music every Friday at the John and Orpha Blair Hospice House.
The Philomel Club of Warren was founded in 1891 as a monthly music society meeting at the Woman's Club. Today it sponsors public concerts and supports young musicians through the Little Bach Society and Junior Philomel programs. Meeting monthly at the Woman's Club, the Philomel offers free public recitals with guests welcomed at all Philomel programs. Musical scholarships are awarded and the club collaborates with other local music groups, such as the Mozart Club of Jamestown.
An active, community-focused educational organization, the Philomel maintains its mission of promoting music and fostering cultural engagement.
The next upcoming program will be held on October 14 at Jamestown's Mozart Club at the Marvin House, 2 West Fifth Street, Jamestown. Joan Eighmey and Cody Hiller will perform beginning at 1:30 p.m. On Nov. 11, another program will be held at the Woman's Club in Warren, also beginning at 1:30 p.m. The public is encouraged to be part of the audience and enjoy the remarkable musical gifts within our community.
