Elk Township open house set for Saturday

Elk Township Historical Society will host its second Open House of 2026, on Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m.

The restored 1800s classroom, the original one-room Scandia School building, is an exciting piece of our past. Housing 100 years of Elk Township school records, we have class photos displayed with names.

The original teacher’s desk, old student desks and original chalk board will delight all who visit. The museum holds many records, which may help find relatives, who once lived in the area. It has notebooks of early family histories, cemetery records, obituary books, many photos and so much more.

Antique items fill the museum, things which were necessary in everyday life. Elk Township was settled in 1795, so life was a struggle back then, without the modern conveniences, of today. Farming was difficult, due to the rocks and boulders that dot the hilly landscape. The small farm implement collection is interesting to explore.

Speaking of rocks, Scandia Rock Collector Sharon Johnson will be answering questions about her hobby and have part of her collection on display in the Community Room, for those interested. She has brought more rocks to Scandia, from all over the US.

Area historian Dr. Julie Boozer has penned several books, which are available, on site, for a donation.

Young and old are encouraged to visit for a delightful afternoon. There is something for everyone, and the museum is free. It is located at the four corners in Scandia, just north of Warren or west of Russell.

Starting at $3.50/week.
