Penn Soil Resource Conservation and Development Council will be at the Memorial Day festivities taking place in Russell on Saturday, May 23. The free community event will take place at the Larimer Park Boat Launch in Russell from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.. showing adults how to fit their children and themselves for the proper PFD (lifejacket) for particular water sports. Participants will learn some water safety including rescues and how to use a throw bag and how to signal for help in an emergency in remote regions. Information on hypothermia and cold water shock will be taught, as well as information on native and invasive plant and insect species, composting and rain gardens. A fun game of kayak twister will be held. The water safety presentation is sponsored by R.O.A.R. – Revitalization of Akeley/Russell, with support from the PA Environmental Council.
