YPL Book Club: Tuesday, February 13th from 3:00 – 4:00 pm, the Youngsville Library’s Book Club will meet to discuss the book “Room” by Emma Donoghue. If you are interested in joining “fellow-readers” in this fun, laid-back, monthly book discussion group just stop-in and join in the lively conversation. YPL’s “Reading Between the Spines” Book Club meets the second Tuesday of each month from 3:00 – 4:00 pm. Questions call 814-563-7670.

MISCELLANEOUS NEWS

(a) Legion Auxiliary Student-Essay Contest: Each year the American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) sponsors an Americanism Essay Contest for students in grades 3-12. Including students with special needs. This year’s essay title is “What does Freedom mean to me?” There is a cash award at the local level, by the Youngsville American Legion Auxiliary, for each of the six groups/classes. First place = $75, second place = $50, and third place = $25.

Grade levels are divided into six classes: Class 1- grades 3 & 4, Class 2 -grades 5 & 6, Class 3-grades 7 & 8, Class 4- grades 9 & 10, Class 5- grades 11 & 12, Class 6- students with special needs. Word count requirements for the essay are dependent upon the Class/grade level.

The point system for judging is: 50% content, 20% English, 10% originality, 10% neatness, and 10% spelling. Each essay submission MUST include a completed 2024 National Essay Contest Cover sheet. Downloadable copies of the 2024 Contest Cover Sheet and essay details are available on the YoungsvilleLibrary.org website and hard copies are available at the Youngsville Public Library Mondays & Wednesdays 10 am – 6 p m, Tuesdays 10 am – 3 pm, and Fridays 11 am -4 pm (563-7670) and Youngsville area schools.

Essays must be submitted to the Youngsville American Legion Auxiliary by February 20, 2024. Winning essays will then be submitted to the American Legion Auxiliary at the national level. National winners will be posted at www.ALAforVeterans.org.

(b) Garland Bingo: Monday, February 5th is Bingo Night at the Garland Fire Hall. Doors open at 4:00 pm, Kitchen opens at 4:00 pm, Bingo starts at 6:00 pm. $35 All you can play on a regular card include Lucky Number + Layer Cake Jackpot. Additional Bingo games too. Kitchen special: Chicken fingers & onion rings. Bingo fundraisers help support GVFD.

(c) Super Bingo Event: Sunday, February 11th is a “Super Bingo” fundraising event at the Garland Fire Hall. Doors open at Noon and the game starts at 2:00 pm. $50 admission and over $4,000 in cash prizes. There will be lots of other fun ways to win also, including a penny raffle and lottery raffle. (d) Lent Fish Fry: During Lent, the Youngsville Free Methodist Church (179 Davis Street) will have Friday Fish Fry Dinner Fundraiser from 5:00 – 7:00 pm beginning Friday, February 16th and ending March 22nd. Take out is available. Cost is $13 donation per fish fry dinner and includes: fish, choice of potato, choice of coleslaw or applesauce.
