Alzheimer’s Walk slated for Saturday
Warren is gearing up to walk for a cause.
The Alzheimer’s Association’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s is scheduled for Saturday at Betts Park and is looking for local participants.
“Held annually in more than 600 communities nationwide, Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research,” according to the event website, alz.org/walk.
Those interested can register to participate or donate on the website using the “Find Your Walk” link by zip code or state, or by searching for a team or participant.
“We currently have almost 100 participants registered and collectively they have raised just over $14,000 through their fundraising efforts,” Development Manager for the Alzheimer’s Association Greater Pennsylvania Chapter Amy Ritzel said. “Our goal for this event is to raise $25,000.”
In-person registration begins at 9 a.m. and an opening ceremony is scheduled at 10 a.m. before the walk itself at 10:30 a.m. The opening ceremony features the Promise Garden.
“On Walk day, participants honor those affected by Alzheimer’s with the poignant Promise Garden ceremony — a mission-focused experience that signifies our solidarity in the fight against the disease,” according to an event release. “The colors of the Promise Garden flowers represent people’s connection to Alzheimer’s — their personal reasons to end the disease.”
More than 6 million people in the United States are living with Alzheimers and more than 11 million others act as caregivers for those with the disease, according to the release.
“We’re closer than ever to stopping Alzheimer’s,” Ritzel said. “We hope that everyone in our community can join us by starting a team to help the Alzheimer’s Association raise awareness and funds for families facing the disease today, take more steps toward treatments and finally ending this disease.”
Event sponsors this year include United Refining, Senior Helpers Warren, Warren General, Targeted Pet Treats and Elwood National Forge. Other businesses who have made contributions through our Friends of the Walk Campaign include Whirley Drinkworks, Ed Shults of Warren, Jones Chevrolet Buick GMC, and Peterson Blick Funeral Home, according to Ritzel.
“The Warren Walk to End Alzheimer’s would not be possible without the generous support of our sponsors, Friends of the Walk, and our participants,” Ritzel said.
