Groups to sponsor Seed to Supper program

The Warren County Master Gardeners and Youngsville Free Methodist Church are working to sponsor a program to help the community learn how to grow the foods families eat.

The six classes extend through the summer.

“Participants will learn how to build healthy soil, choose crops to grow, plant care, and harvesting techniques,” according to a Master Gardeners release. “There will also be classes on how to cook fresh garden and table foods.”

“At a time when many in our community are on a fixed income and grocery prices are rising, growing your own food is a fun and healthy way to cut the weekly grocery bill,” Warren County Master Gardener Coordinator Susan Witter said.

Donations from local businesses including Walmart and Tractor Supply help make the program possible, but the Master Gardeners’ main fundraiser of the year is the annual Plant and Garden Sale which will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 20, at the DeFrees Pavilion at Betts Park.

“Proceeds from the sale allow the Master Gardeners to purchase supplies for the participants in the Seed to Supper program, beautify the Demonstration Garden at Betts Park, and provide educational programs for the public,” according to the release.

More information about the Seed to Supper program or becoming a Master Gardener, as well as answers to gardening questions are available by contacting Witter at skw5797@psu.edu.
