Golf scramble to aid Veterans Council

The organizers of events that raise money for the Warren County Veterans Council are hoping to up their game.

Benefit dinners have been popular and done a good job of raising money for the council’s emergency relief fund.

“In seven years, we’ve raised in excess of $70,000,” Gene Bailey said. “That started with Scott (Hollabaugh) asking, ‘What can we do for the veterans of the county?'”

This year, there will be dinners and golf. The inaugural Veterans Golf Scramble will be held Saturday, Aug. 19, at Cable Hollow Golf Course.

“In the past couple years, we’ve had a big increase in requests for help,” Debbie Brown said. “With more requests, you need more money.”

“Other golf scrambles make good money for their causes,” Brown said. All of the proceeds from the event will go directly to the emergency relief fund.

The organizers are looking for golfers, sponsors, and donors.

There are already a couple title sponsor on board – Pamela’s Pampered Pets and Pennsylvania Hardwoods – and numerous hole sponsors, Bailey said.

“Teams are filling up fast,” Brown said. The event is set for an initial 36 teams but could expand to 72. “If we fill the first round, we’ll open up a second.”

“Several people have sent donations,” Bailey said.

Donated items may be used in basket raffles or other fundraisers associated with the events.

The golf scramble doesn’t mean the end of the other benefit events.

“Cabin in the Pines is doing a chicken barbecue on their dime,” Bailey said. “We’re going to do another chili cookoff.”

Donors may contact Brown at (814) 706-2171, Bailey at (814) 462-8695, or Hollabaugh at (814) 563-2823. Those interested in golfing may contact Cable Hollow at (814) 757-4765.
