TCCS students, staff were ‘exemplary’ during emergency
When a small fire broke out Thursday afternoon at Tidioute Community Charter School, school was interrupted, but everything else went off without a hitch.
“TCCS had a small fire in our wood shop area at 1 p.m.,” CEO Dr. Doug Allen said. “Smoke filled the area of our downstairs tech/shop classroom.”
“Our fire/smoke/heat sensory alarm system proved valuable as expected and the smoke alarm went off,” he said.
That warning sent the occupants of the school away from any danger.
“All 292 present students in K through 12 and 58 employees present evacuated per regulations,” Allen said.
The evacuation process took less than 1.3 minutes, he said.
“Students, employees, contracted employees, and all K-12 teachers and others evacuated our school around 1 p.m. today to the fire hall for one hour or so,” Board of Trustees President Albert Haney said. “The kids and staff and first responders in Tidioute were exemplary in this emergency. We will review all safety systems tomorrow, however, everyone responded as expected.”
He said the fire department responded to the call in less than 10 minutes.
“Thank you to the Tidioute Area Fire Department for a fast and professional response,” Haney said. “Safety is a number 1 concern at TCCS.”
