Fundraisers on tap in Youngsville, Clarendon

Submitted Photo October Storytime at the Youngsville Public Library will be held today. Pull up a chair and get ready to hear stories, dance to music and take part in interactive theme-based fun from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Targeted ages are 3-5 years but all are welcome, no registration required. Storytime is offered the second Tuesday of each month from 10:30 to 11 a.m. at the Youngsville Library.

A Night at the Races will be held from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday at the Youngsville Fire Hall.

Doors open at 6 p.m. Proceeds benefit the Brokenstraw Valley Swimming Pool. Those attending must be 21 years of age. The event includes wagering on videotaped horse racing. There will be door prizes and money paid out for wagers on the top three horses in each race. All wagers are a $2 minimum with payouts determined by number of winning tickets. The event is bring-your-own-alcohol. Light snacks will be provided. There will also be pull tabs and 50-50 giveaways.

The inaugural Cherry Grove Haunted Hay Ride will be held at the Cherry Grove Volunteer Fire Department, 6045 Cherry Grove Road, Clarendon, from 7 to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday. All proceeds will benefit the Sheffield football team. Admission is $5 per person per entry for the hay ride. There will be a bonfire taking place outside the fire department. Food and drink will also be available for purchase inside the fire hall.

Those attending are asked to dress accordingly as the event takes place outside rain or shine. Boots and long pants are recommended. Younger children are welcome to attend (at parent’s discretion) but must be accompanied by an adult as some scenes on the Haunted Hay Ride will contain disturbing content that may not be appropriate for all audiences. There will also be use of strobe lights and in some places possible tripping hazards. More information will be provided/available at the entrance.

RESCHEDULED EVENT

Haunted House & Trolley Tours rescheduled: Due to unforeseen circumstances, the Warren County Historical Society has to reschedule its Haunted House & Trolley Tours event. The new dates for this event are Oct. 28-29 from 6 to 9 p.m. Take a spooky horse-drawn trolley ride featuring tales of Warren’s unluckiest early citizens. Trolley tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. Advanced purchase recommended. Tickets may be purchased at 210 Fourth Ave., Warren, or online at warrenhistory.org. Free Job Workshops: On Wednesday, Danielle Ditz will hold three separate career development workshops at the Youngsville Public Library.

The first workshop is from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and focus on SkillUP PA. The session is in-person with walk-ins welcome. SkillUP PA provides access to more than 6,000 free, online skills training courses to help prepare for a new career path, enhance an existing skill-set, and more. From 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Ditz will have an open, walk-in question-and-answer session. Ask personalized questions regarding job searches, PA CareerLink, free job training opportunities, and more. No registration needed. From 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., Ditz will lead a “Steps to a Successful Interview” workshop for in-person, virtual or by-phone attendance. Book club: Youngsville Library’s book club will meet today from 3 to 4 p.m. The book to be discussed is “The Only Woman in the Room” by Marie Benedict. The public is welcome.

MISCELLANEOUS NEWS

October Pickleball “classes”: It’s not too late to learn the basics of how to play pickleball before the snow flies. There are still beginner pickleball “classes” that are being offered at Island Park in Youngsville on the newly created pickleball courts (in the tennis court area). There is no registration for the casual and low-key classes. Those attending also don’t have to stay for the whole time nor does anyone have to own any pickleball equipment as the person offering the classes brings extra equipment.

October pickleball dates remaining are: Wednesday from 9 to 11 a.m. and Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m.

Those who don’t have pickleball equipment but would like to try it out can borrow pickleball paddles and balls from the Youngsville YMCA at Island Park. Those borrowing equipment do not need to be a YMCA member to borrow the pickleball equipment. Contact the Youngsville YMCA at 814-802-1618 for details. FREE COMMUNITY MEALS

Free community meals that are offered n Wednesdays from 5 to 6 p.m. at the Youngsville Free Methodist Church, 179 Davis St., have resumed. Meals are open to the public. Many volunteers are needed to help make these meals a success. COMMUNITY DAY

Downtown Warren Community Day will be held Friday and Saturday. Join WCCBI staff, YMCA of Warren County, and Warren Antiques & Giftware for Downtown Warren Community Days with family activities planned for Friday night and Saturday. Activities and vendors set up on Liberty Street and Second Avenue in downtown Warren. The event starts at 4 p.m. on Friday and Saturday at 6 p.m.
