Warren County students have chipped in to make PennDOT snow plows on the roads in the county just a little more beautiful.
It’s part of the “Paint the Plow” program that students have been participating in at county schools for several years.
According to PennDOT, the program — which has students paint a snow plow blade based on a provided theme — is aimed to “challenge their creativity and bring awareness to winter traffic safety.”
The theme this year was “School Spirit.”
“‘Paint the Plow’ is an excellent opportunity for PennDOT to engage with teens because it allows them to express themselves while being reminded about safe driving behavior, particularly in the upcoming winter months,” PennDOT District 1 Executive Brian McNulty, said.

PennDOT said the program also offered “an opportunity to see a plow firsthand to give them a stronger understanding of the size of the department’s trucks and the importance of giving drivers plenty of space to maintain the roadways during the inclement weather,” according to a statement.
Participating county schools included the four high schools of the Warren County School District and the Tidioute Community Charter School, though PennDOT has not posted a photo of the Youngsville or Tidioute plows.
Members of the public can view photos of the painted plow blades online at www.penndot.gov/District1 by clicking on the “Paint the Plow” button.
PennDOT has operated the program since 2015 with the exception of 2020, which was canceled due to the pandemic. In prior years, a vote was held on the various designs but PennDOT said that was not brought back in 2021 “to emphasize the fun side of the partnership” rather than a competitive element.
