Lenten fish dinner goes on through season

With it being almost a year since the pandemic began, many individuals, businesses and organizations have adapted to the current and hopefully temporary changes necessary to continue moving forward.

For local churches, these changes were vital to resuming annual events that both benefit the churches and the community.

One of these events is the Lenten Fish Dinner for the Sheffield Knights of Columbus of Holy Redeemer/St. Anthony Parish.

For 34 years, the Knights of Columbus have hosted this dinner at the St. Paul Center in Saybrook. Along with helping to defray the expenses of the church, the proceeds are also used for a wide variety of needs and activities in the local area including but not limited to, Coats for Kids, Sheffield Food Pantry, Sheffield Volunteer Fire Department, Sheffield Township Playground, Sheffield High School athletic teams, and local individuals in need.

“It’s the help we’re able to give our parish and community,” said Grand Knight of the Sheffield Knights of Columbus Jack Werner. “Our reach from the church to spread our name and the word of Christ and provide a service. “

When asked about COVID-19 preparedness, Werner insured that the St. Paul Center will be cleaned and sanitized regularly, and all standard Covid-19 protocols will be observed.

“It’s significant in carrying on our tradition,” Werner said. “Like last year, we started and stopped because it was in the best interest for everyone to do so.”

In an effort to be able to carry on throughout the entirety of Lent, biggest change in the name of safety from last year will be that this year’s dinner will be take-out-only. Proper distancing will be required if individuals choose to order within the lobby and not take advantage of calling ahead to arrange a curbside pick-up.

The Lenten fish dinner will be held every Friday of Lent from Feb. 19 to April 2 between 5-7 p.m. Included in the $10 dinner is deep fried haddock, French fries, coleslaw and a fresh roll.

Those who opt for curbside pick-up may call (814) 968-5915.
