VITA TAX PREP

Cherry McIntyre, local site coordinator for Volunteer Tax Income Assistance (VITA) program, led a lengthy discussion with fellow volunteer tax preparers on how to complete the tax season with COVID-19. It will take the cooperation of the VITA tax volunteers, as well as, cooperation and patience from people participating in the program in order to produce this free service safely.

COVID-19 might be transferred via the paperwork submitted. So we can help mitigate transference of the virus to the tax preparation volunteers and our staff at the Allegheny Community Center the following procedures will be in place. Due to the serious nature of COVID, no exceptions can be made.

¯ At the ACC you can pick up your Tax Intake Form and an envelope to return your taxes to us. There will be a table in the ground floor lobby area closest to the rear entrance beginning January 21st 2021. Park in the back parking lot and come up the ramp. Take the envelope and in-take form home with you and complete all the information required. Please make sure you have included all of the required paper work. The lack of required documents will further delay your taxes being completed.

¯ No taxes will be completed without a copy of SSN cards of every family member living with you. The senior centers are not making copies of these or any other documents at this time as we are closed to the public.

¯ Return your completed Tax Intake Form, copies of SSN cards, and your relevant tax documents in the envelope we provided to you to the ACC. This can be dropped off Monday – Thursday from 9:00 until 2:00 or you can mail them to ACC, 42 Clark Street, Warren, PA 16365. Your taxes will be sealed, boxed, and stored in a locked room for 5 days in order to mitigate COVID-19 transference. At the end of the quarantine you will be contacted via phone by a VITA volunteer who will check your Tax Intake Form and corresponding paperwork. Once your taxes are completed, they are again sealed and boxed for 5 days for your safety. The staff at the ACC will call you when to come and pick up your completed taxes.

VITA tax service is a program that many of our community members have come to rely on. Please help us to continue to provide this valuable free service by adhering to the COVID-19 procedures that assist in protecting all of us. Tax Intake Forms and envelopes will not be available until January 21st. As of that date they will be in the downstairs, rear entrance lobby of the Allegheny Community Center. If you have any questions please call 723-4180.
