Barbecue to support Step Up For Autism

CELORON, N.Y. — A chicken barbecue has been scheduled to support the 11th annual Step Up for Autism event.

The drive-thru barbecue is set for Friday, Oct. 2, in the rear parking lot of The Resource Center’s administrative offices at 200 Dunham Ave., Celoron. People can select one of three time periods (11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., 1 to 3 p.m. or 3 to 5 p.m.) to pick up their meal.

The chicken will be prepared by Weidner BBQ. Meals consisting of chicken, baked beans, macaroni salad, roll and butter cost $12. In addition, candy apples can be ordered for $3 each and caramel apples are $5 apiece. There will not be any on-site sales the day of the event; food must be purchased in advance, and the deadline to order is Sept. 24. People can place their orders online at www.stepupforautism.com.

Step Up for Autism is conducted each year by Filling the Gap Inc., and The Resource Center. Money raised through the event benefits TRC’s SUCCESS program, which teaches socialization skills to youths on the autism spectrum.

Step Up for Autism typically takes place in September and includes a 1.5-mile walk, lunch and a sweets auction. Because of the pandemic, those in-person events will not take place this year. Instead, people are encouraged to sign up to do a virtual event (walking, running, cycling, paddling, etc.) on their own any time before September 30. Registration is $20 if using a paper form or $22.50 if registering online at the Step Up for Autism web site. Paid registrants will receive a T-shirt.

T-shirts also are available for $10 (for sizes extra large and smaller) or $15 (2XL or larger).

People wishing to make a donation in support of Step Up for Autism can send a check to Filling the Gap, 92 Fairmount Ave., Jamestown, NY, 14701, or by visiting www.fillingthegap.net. Those contributing $10 or more are eligible to become a member of The Resource Center. TRC members receive a membership card entitling them to discounts at area businesses.
