DAR announces essay contest

A local social group is looking to expand the historical awareness of students in the area.

And they’ve attached a cash prize to the effort.

The Gen. Joseph Warren Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Warren Suffragette Centennial Group are hosting an essay contest for all high school seniors in Warren and Forest counties.

The aim of the contest, according to a statement from the DAR is to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, passed by Congress in June 2019 and ratified by the states on August 18, 1920.

“The theme for this contest is ‘The Campaign for the 19th Amendment’ and seeks to encourage the study of American History as well as written communication skill development,” the DAR said in a statement. “Essay guidelines are available from school guidance counselors and essay submissions are due by March 15, 2020.”

The judges will be members of the DAR and the Suffragette Centennial group. Prizes — $300 for first place, $200 for second and $100 for third — will be awarded. The prizes, certificates and pins will be presented at senior awards ceremonies.
