Photo submitted to Times Observer A wide age-range of children enjoy creating and playing with STEM toys in the Warren Public Library Children’s Department on February 22 during the Build It Up, Take It Down program. Families can drop in anytime between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturdays now through the end of March to play. Build It Up provides ample STEM opportunities for learning by playing with large wooden blocks, LEGO, Bee-Bot coding robots, Magna Tiles, Mosaic Sticker sheets and other toys that enhance the experience. One young man commented to his father, “We need to come to the library more often,” as they were leaving the department. Preregistration isn’t required.

Tuesday afternoon at the Allegheny Community Center, Marjorie Polito was first and Connie Michell was second. At the Woman’s Club Thursday afternoon, Alice Kellogg and Rita Mancuso were first and second. Patty Baker came in first Thursday evening at the library and Connie Lucia was second.

FAW backpack trip

The annual winter backpacking trip of Friends of Allegheny Wilderness will take place over the weekend of March 7 and 8 at the Morrison Run Trail into the untrammeled wilds of the nearly 7,000-acre proposed Morrison Run Wilderness Area in Warren County (http://www.pawild.org/images/maps/morrison–run.jpg).

Hikers will meet Saturday morning at the Morrison Run trailhead on Pennsylvania Route 59. They will stop overnight on Saturday evening to camp at a location along the way, likely at the Morrison Campground along the Kinzua Bay arm of the Allegheny Reservoir, unless the group decides camping in a less developed location is desirable. The full trip will be at least eight miles, maybe more than 10 miles, with the exact route to be determined (might be somewhat weather-dependent).

There is no cost to join this hike, but participants will be responsible for bringing all of their own food and water, camping equipment, and should come fully-prepared for any weather conditions that we may encounter. Depending on the depth of the snow during that weekend, snowshoes may be advisable, though probably not critical. Keep an eye on the weather forecast.

Contact FAW at info@pawild.org for more information or to sign up for the trip.
