DeFrees Center hosts storybook breakfast event

If you could have bacon and eggs with anyone, who would you choose? What if you could have a spoonful of sugar with Mary Poppins or a gobstopper with Willy Wonka?

A new event at the Jefferson DeFrees Family Center is offering that and more. The first Storybook Breakfast will be held on Saturday, Jan. 25 at the center located at 207 Second Ave. Warren.

Breakfast times are 9 a.m. or 11 a.m., with each event lasting about an hour. Families can enjoy breakfast and interact with a variety of storybook characters.

Each table will be set in a storybook theme. The events each include a basket raffle, photo opportunities and a goody bag for each child.

The Youth Connection and the Enchanted Fairy Tale Troupe will provide many of the characters, including princesses, superheroes, Willy Wonka, Mary Poppins and Bert (of Sesame Street fame) and more. There may even be an appearance by one or two surprise characters, according to Jennifer Madigan, community outreach coordinator for the center and local program coordinator of the Imagination Library of Warren County.

Funds raised from the event benefit Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library of Warren County. The Imagination Library is a literacy program for children from the ages of birth to the month of their 5th birthday. Registered Warren County children in that age range receive one free book a month mailed to their home. Books are award-winning and age appropriate.

Any child who is under the age of five and a resident of Warren County is eligible to register for the program. Books are mailed free of charge to registered families. “With the help of the Dollywood Foundation and many generous folks from our community we are able to offer this amazing early literacy program to the families of Warren County,” Madigan said.

Tickets for the Storybook Breakfast are $10 for adults and $5 for children. Tickets can be purchased at the Jefferson DeFrees Family Center Monday- through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sponsorship opportunities are still available. Questions can be directed to Jennifer Madigan, community outreach coordinator at Jefferson DeFrees Family Center (814) 723-6350 or jmadigan@jdfamilycenter.org.
