Antiques Study Club holds Christmas Luncheon

Members of the Antiques Study Club gathered at the Woman’s Club on December 9 for its annual Christmas luncheon.

Chairwoman Judith Scalise and her committee — Sally Clark, Jill Dart, Betty McPherson, Sally Siefert, Roberta Ward, Crissi Winans, Janice Moore, and Jackie Jones-Beck — provided and served wine, punch, and refreshments for the social hour. They also decorated the luncheon tables with Christmas table runners, poinsettias and fur teddy bears.

Each place setting had a vintage hankie favor that was tied with either red, green, gold, or silver ribbons. The different colors of ribbon represented the era when they were made, which was from the 1920s to the early 1950s. These were a gift to the members from Jill Dart’s collection.

Before the luncheon, which was catered and served by Linda Slocum, President Marianne Fernstrom welcomed everyone, including one new member, Holly Le Meur. Poet Laureate Patricia Slattery read two poems, “A Gift of Ravioli” by Leo Buscaglia, and “A Politically Correct Christmas.”

Following lunch, the club’s program chairwoman, Vicki Ferrie, presented a talk on “Fun with Furs.” Fur trapping was an important industry that helped to build America, including Warren County. Humans began wearing clothing made with furs 170,000 years ago. The demand for furs boomed in the Victorian era and by the 1950s, most film stars were wearing luxury furs. By the 1960s, fur was more affordable than ever and designers even began crafting faux fur coats and accessories. Ferrie shared some of her fur pieces, as did many members who wore or brought hats, muffs, collars, and coats, which belonged to friends or family members of long ago.

The next meeting will be held on January 27, 2020, at the Woman’s Club.
