Hiking 101: Bureau of State Parks leads the adventure

Hiking 101 will be held at Chapman State Park on Friday, Sept. 27, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Participants will learn how to enable students to discover Penn’s Woods through an interdisciplinary set of lessons created by the PA Bureau of State Parks. Lessons focus on health, fitness, trip planning, map reading, identifying local trails, forest ecology, and nature journaling.

The lessons meet several Physical Education and Health standards as well as standards for Geography, Science and Ecology, and the Humanities. The course provides 6.5 hours of ACT 48 hours.

Registration is limited to 15 participants. Early registration is encouraged. Deadline to register is Wednesday, Sept. 18. To register, contact Jen Moore, environmental education specialist, at (814) 723-0259, or jennmoore@pa.gov.

The fee for the course is $10 which includes lesson plans, access to loaner equipment, refreshments and ACT 48 hours. Checks should be made payable to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
