Brown Bag Creative Club

Bring your own projects and supplies to this shared monthly studio session. Work alongside other creatives on individual projects, share inspiration, knowledge and constructive critiques. The next meeting will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 3, at Audubon Community Nature Center, 1600 Riverside Road, Jamestown, N.Y.

PA School Retirees (PASR) luncheon

The Warren/Forest Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees new retirees luncheon meeting will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27, at Richard’s Restaurant, Route 6, in Youngsville.

New retirees are invited to enjoy a free lunch from the menu and anyone may bring a spouse or guest.

The guest speaker will be Peter Fitzpatrick from the Pennsylvania Senior Medicare Patrol presenting Medicare Fraud Prevention. For reservations, contact Treasurer Jack Werner at (814) 968-5625 or werners661@gmail.com, by Friday, Sept. 20.

CASA Superhero 5K

CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children) of Warren and Forest counties will host a 5K Superhero event on Saturday morning, Sept. 21, beginning at 8:30 a.m. in Pleasant Township. The event will include a one-mile family walk/run at 9:15 a.m., featuring a superhero gauntlet, a 5K road race (at 10 a.m.) , and a 5K relay race (also at 10 a.m.) — featuring four-person teams from our area’s helping professionals (e.g., teachers, doctors, nurses, as well as fire, EMT, and police department personnel). The event will include an appearance by the Enchanted Fairytale Troupe and the Warrin’ Wrecking Dolls.

Participating children will receive superhero capes and all entrants are encouraged to dress as their favorite superhero. The 5K registration is $30 and the one-mile family walk is only $5 per person. There will be prizes for best costumes as well as the 5K race age-group winners. CASA of Warren and Forest County is part of a national network of community-based, non-profit organizations that recruit, screen, train, and supervise volunteers to “Speak Up for a Child” removed from the home due to abuse or neglect. CASA works one-on-one with an abused or neglected child, advocating for his or her best interests and working towards achieving permanency in a safe, nurturing home as soon as possible. The CASA vision is to help provide a safe and loving home for every child.

L. L. Atkins reunion

The 59th L.L. Atkins family reunion was held August 3 at Werner Park in Russell. It was a beautiful afternoon where a total of 43 family members gathered to reminisce. The Brownell Family hosted the reunion, and games were provided. A potluck lunch was held. The officers for the reunion remained the same for next year: Kevin Cable – President, Debbie Tuller – Vice President, JoLynn Stearns – Secretary, Nancy Szopinski – Treasurer and Janis Wall – Historian. Audrey Cable was the oldest family member present. Jeff Owen traveled the farthest, coming from South Korea, and Avery Battle was the youngest family member present. Next year will be the 60th reunion and will be hosted by the Blackmer Family.

Walk for Diabetes

The Jamestown chapter of the International Lions Club will be hosting an inaugural ‘Walk for Diabetes’ on September 28 at the YMCA Camp Onyahsa, located on East Lake Road in Dewittville.

Proceeds from the event, which will include both a beginners and a more advanced walking/hiking trail, will benefit Camp Onyahsa’s Summer Camp for Youth with Diabetes, a week-long residential camp program aimed at enhancing healthcare, diabetes education, dietary guidelines for children with Type I or Type II Diabetes, along with traditional camp activities. Individuals and teams can register for the event by searching Lions Club Walk for Diabetes at Eventbrite.com. Sign-in for the event begins at 9 a.m.

The event, in partnership with The Chautauqua Center, will feature educational information from area providers, family-friendly activities in partnership with the YMCA, a live performance with local musical act Deep Fried and Dipped in Honey, and light refreshments.
