Class picnic

The Warren High School class of 1960 will meet for a picnic from 11 a.m. to noon Wednesday, July 24, at Blair Smoulder’s house, 3162 Chautauqua Ave., Ashville, N.Y. Meat, drinks, and dessert will be provided. Bring a dish to pass. Classmates, spouses, and significant others are welcome.

Diabetes workshop

There will be a free diabetes management workshop, for both people with diabetes, and those who care for people with diabetes, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesdays from Aug. 6 through Sept. 10, at Warren General Hospital.

The workshop, sponsored by LECOM Health — Lifeworks Erie and Lake Erie Integrated Geriatric Health Team, will teach participants techniques for dealing with fatigue, pain, hyper- and hypoglycemia, stress, and emotional problems; appropriate exercises for maintaining and improving strength, flexibility, and endurance; appropriate use of medications; communicating effectively with family, friends, and health professionals; and nutrition.

Each participant will receive a copy of the companion book, Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions (4th Edition) and a relaxation CD.

Those interested in the workshop may register by calling (814) 453-5072. There is a maximum of 18 participants for the class.

WASU bus trip

The Warren Area Student Union is taking a trip to a Pirates game and inviting people to go along.

A bus will leave Warren at 8:30 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 8, for the 1:30 p.m. Pirates vs. St. Louis Cardinals game at PNC Park. The cost is $74 per person which includes transportation, game ticket, $10 in concessions or team store purchases, and a tip for the driver.

Adults and children under 18 accompanied by adults may bring payment and sign up at WASU, 330 Hickory St., between 3:30 and 6 p.m. on weekdays, or by sending a check to Director Pam Falber, % WASU, 330 Hickory St., Warren, PA, 16365.

Allegheny Outdoor Club

On Sunday, July 21, Allegheny Outdoor Club will hike Cornplanter State Forest near Tionesta and Nieltown, with members meeting at the parking lot on Nieltown Road at 1:30 p.m. (from Tionesta take Rt. 36N two miles, turn right on Nieltown Road, go one mile, and the sign for Cornplanter is on the left). Halls of Ivy

Simon Smith, a sophomore majoring in economics at the University of Rochester, has been named to the Dean’s List for academic achievement for the spring 2019 semester.

Smith, of Warren, is the son of Marisa Smith and Kurt Smith, and a graduate of Warren Area High School.

2nd Harvest Military Share

Second Harvest Food Bank will be bringing Military Share to Warren County veterans at least three more times before the end of the year.

“Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest PA wants to help military families who are struggling to put nutritious food on the table,” according to a Second Harvest release. “In northwest Pennsylvania, nearly 18 percent of households receiving food assistance have at least one member who has served or is serving in the military.”

Military Share distributions of free fresh produce and other grocery products to families that qualify on the basis of income are scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6, Thursday, Sept. 5, and Monday, Nov. 11, at the VA Clinic at the Farm Colony in North Warren.

“We have many Veterans and their families that this has made such a great impact on,” Warren County Veterans Affairs Director Ed Burris said. “The program here has been a great success. Warren was one of the first Community-Based Outpatient Clinics to receive the second Harvest Food Bank delivery.”
