In memory of one of their own

Warren County Career Center is honoring one of its own.

Several programs have gotten together to make a joint contribution to the Hayden Salapek Football Lineman Scholarship.

Salapek was part of the welding program at the career center for three years.

He was killed in a September ATV crash in Indiana.

“Hayden was definitely one of our all-stars,” Welding Teacher Nate McNett said. “He was a kind-hearted young man who will be missed. Hayden was someone I could rely on to work on any project career center-wide.”

His brother, Collin, is now in the machining program at the career center.

The Salapek family founded the scholarship through the Community Foundation of Warren County in November.

In response, the collision repair shop initiated the career center’s Holiday Scholarship Challenge.

“This is a nice opportunity to teach our students about giving back,” Collision Repair Teacher Robert Smith said. “Students are taking part in a scholarship that will give back to a student every year.”

The students in that shop voted to donate $100 to the scholarship fund and challenged other shops to do the same, according to Marketing Teacher Cathie Cummings. “For each career center class that donates $100 or more, the collision repair class will donate an additional $20.”

The collision, marketing, culinary, and health and medical assisting classes have made donations.
