Garden Club celebrates Arbor Day

President Patricia Christy welcomed members to the April 26 meeting of Warren Garden Club at St. Joseph Catholic Church.

The Garden Club welcomed Don Watts, Master Bird Bander, past president of the Roger Tory Peterson Ornithological Club, Coordinator of the Warren Christmas Bird Count, Wildlife Technician and overall bird enthusiast.

Watts presented a program on four popular birds in the Warren area: the Robin, the Goldfinch, the Bluejay and the Cardinal. The diet, nesting habits, range and life expectancy of each bird was discussed.

Hostess Chairman Dorothy McCarthy, Sandy Ransom and Lucy Masterson provided refreshments.

On Saturday, April 28, Josie Gerardi, Chairperson, Warren Street Landscape Committee, and Patricia Christy, Warren Garden Club President, welcomed about 40 residents to the annual Arbor Day celebration. Mayor Cashman proclaimed it Arbor Day in Warren; Paula Bogart spoke about the Mountain Silverbell tree planted near the Hickory Street Bridge; Tom Frair was recognized for this 29 years of service; and Cecile Stelter, PA Bureau of Forestry, presented the Tree City Flag. Matt Holtz, City of Warren, represented the Street Landscape Committee, and Don Watts of the National Audubon Society spoke about the gazebo that will be a place to enjoy wild birds and animals who depend on the river.

Mary Conarro represented the Street Landscape Committee and donors as she cut the ribbon to symbolize the opening of the gazebo for all who wish to enjoy nature along the Allegheny.

Dorothy McCarthy and her committee of Louise Dryer, Gail Cowan, Josie Gerardi, Roberta Ward and Dottie Higgins served coffee, lemonade and cookies.

The May Garden Club meeting will be a design class that will help garden club members get ready for the June 21 summer flower show, “We Gather Together.” The flower show will be open to the public June 22 and 23 at the Wilder Museum, Irvine. A June 26 bus trip has been planned to the Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens in Akron, Ohio.

The Warren Garden Club welcomes new members. Contact Sandra Ransom, membership chairman, at 723-5107 for more information. The next meeting will be 1 p.m. Thursday, May 17, at St. Joseph Catholic Church.
