Understanding and Responding to Dementia-Related Behavior
A program, Understanding and Responding to Dementia-Related Behavior, will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 23, at the Warren Hi-Ed Building.
During the middle stage of dementia, the person with the disease often starts to exhibit new behaviors that can be confusing for a caregiver. These behaviors are a form of communication, and are essential to understanding the needs of the person with dementia.
To help caregivers decipher behaviors and determine how best to respond, the Alzheimer’s Association offers the Understanding and Responding to Dementia-Related Behavior program. By the end of the session, attendees will be able to:
Identify common triggers for behaviors associated with dementia.
Explain the process for assessing and identifying challenging behaviors.
List strategies to address some common dementia-related behaviors.
The program is presented by Jill Curtis, Education and Outreach Coordinator from the Greater PA Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association in Erie. The event is free, but registration is requested for seating purposes.
Call Higher Ed Office at 723-3222 or, for more information, call Linda Knapp at 726-1199.

Neil Himber and his wife Margie, of Youngsville, drove to Pittsburgh on Monday to hear Reverend Dr. Naim Ateek give a presentation at the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. Reverend Ateek is an Anglican priest and co-founder of the Sabeel Ecumenical Liberation Theology Center in Jerusalem. He is author of “Justice and Only Justice: A Palestinian Theology of Liberation” and “A Palestinian Christian Cry for Reconciliation.” He told of being driven from his home in Palestine in 1948 by the Jewish Zionist army. He was eleven years old at the time and neither he nor his parents or any of his nine brothers and sisters have been allowed to return home. He spoke about the experience of living under military occupation, and how he developed his program of non-violence and liberation theology. Many consider Father Ateek to be the Martin Luther King Jr. of the Palestinian people. He is leading his people in a non-violent struggle for civil rights just as Reverend King did. “It is a sad irony that 60 non-violent Palestinian demonstrators were murdered, and hundreds wounded, in a massacre by the Israeli Occupation Army in Gaza, on the day we met Father Ateek,” said Neil Himber.
