Community Foundation completing scholarship selection process

The Community Foundation of Warren County is making sure scholarship applicants had enough time to deal with its new online application system.

The Community Foundation gives out almost 400 scholarships every year, Executive Director John Lasher said. Last year, the total amount added up to over $900,000. State matching grants from the Pennsylvania Higher Educations Assistance Agency (PHEAA) added $250,000 to that total.

While the foundation’s selection process is behind schedule, members of the selection committee want applicants to know that there is no need for concern.

“The Community Foundation of Warren County is reviewing the applications for scholarships for the 2017-2018 school year,” Lasher said. “Due to issues associated with the online application process and extended deadlines to help students who had challenges with the new method of applying, the selections are running behind the usual schedule.”

All applicants will be notified by email at the completion of the selection process, Lasher said.

If the committee has additional questions for applicants, members will reach out to the families.

The foundation manages and awards dozens of scholarships. Some are based on need, others on field of study.

Scholarships are available particularly for women, graduates of particular schools — not all of them in Warren County, students that live in particular areas, students who are active in their communities, those who have outstanding academics, scholar athletes, and members of the National Honor Society.

Some of the fields Community Foundation-managed scholarships cover include: music, classical piano, education, theater, music education, health careers, nursing, care of the handicapped, liberal arts, fine arts, social work, automotive technology, and auto body repair.

Some scholarships are renewable up to four years. Others are one-time only.

“The foundation staff and selection committees are working daily on completing the selections and awards,” Lasher said. “Award emails, as well as rejection notifications, will be sent to applicants; and scholarship checks will be sent to colleges and other institutions within the next few weeks.”
