ACS to host Pokemon Go event

Pokemon Go will be more than just a game on Saturday, May 13.

That’s when the American Cancer Society will be hosting the Pokemon Go Hunt For The Cure event. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Crescent Park, a $5 admission fee will earn participants the opportunity to walk, hunt Pokemon, ant participate in gym challenges and lures. The admission fee benefits the American Cancer Society and gets participants several coupons for things like a free shirt from Olympia sports, a free one month membership to Snap Fitness and a free ice cream cone from Burger King.

Atrayu Myers came up with the idea for the event, which he said was originally a solo project he wanted to put together for local Pokemon Go players. Myers said he planned on donating any proceeds from the event to the American Cancer Society anyway, as his mother is a cancer survivor and the organization is close to his heart. “I did a lot of community service for them in high school,” said Myers. “But I reached out to them to see if they would like to have a 5k walk” during the event. “To my surprise, the offered much more.”

The event will also feature local vendors with food and drinks, each selling at least one Pokemon themed item, said Myers. The Pokestops along the walking path at Crescent Park will be lured for the duration of the event, Myers said, which increases the likelihood that rare Pokemon will make an appearance. Prizes and games for players are also part of the event, Myers said.
