AARP announces winter driver courses at ACC

The Allegheny Community Center (ACC) will be hosting two AARP Smart Driver Classes this winter at the ACC at 42 Clark Street, over the TAWC Bus Center in Warren.  An 8-hour course will be taught by Charles Merroth on Monday and Tuesday, January 23 and 24, 2017, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. This course is for those Pennsylvania drivers who have not taken the course before or took it over 3-years 3-months ago. The next 4-hour classes will be given for Pennsylvania drivers who have taken the course before, less than 3-years 3-months ago on Tuesday, March 7, 2017 from 1to 5 p.m. by Lawrence Jackson.  If you need to take the refresher course before March, to keep your insurance reduction, you could take the 8-hour course in January.

These courses, revised in 2014, are intended to increase your personal safety by covering the basics of defensive driving. Just as important, the course is designed to make you aware of how changes in vision, hearing and physical reflexes due to aging can impact your driving.  New vehicle and roadway features and new laws of the road will also be discussed.  If you are over 55- years old you may be eligible for an automobile insurance premium reduction or discount of 5% for 3-years (ask your insurance agent – all drivers in the household may have to take the course) and there are no tests (written or driving).

Each class is $20 per person, ($15 for AARP members) paid by check to AARP or cash to the instructor on the first day of class. You do not have to be a member of AARP to take the course.  In addition, this year, there will be an additional charge of $2 per person to help defray the ACC’s operating costs – please bring cash for the ACC. Advanced registration is recommended as class is limited to 25 attendees.  For courses at the ACC please call 723-3237 for registration.
