The Book Cellar celebrating 10 years on Aug. 27 at the Warren Public Library

The Book Cellar of the Warren Public Library has gently-used paperback, trade, and hardback books for adults, plus children’s books, CDs, videos and audio tapes for sale. Prices range from 10 cents to $2.50. There will be a celebration of the 10th Anniversary of the Book Cellar from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27.

In January 2004, one of the members of the Friends of the Library, the late Cleo DeFiore, talked about visiting the New Castle Public Library where a constant sale took place in the library’s basement. She proposed that the Friends consider a similar fund raising idea for the Warren Public Library. The Friends liked the idea and started planning for its implementation. The cost would be minimal as volunteers could run the book selling venue.

Eagle Scout Taiji Nelson submitted plans for renovating the basement space as his Eagle Scout project. A pleasing hue of paint was selected and Taiji began painting the space in October 2005. A display case was procured, as well as lighting fixtures and shelving.

Due to the large scope of the project and a desire to meet building codes and assure safety, it was decided to hire a contractor to install professional caliber lighting, carpeting, divider walls, etc. Ric Mason Builders completed the ceiling, lighting, and partition work, and installed wiring for phone and computer lines. This work was made possible by a grant from the Community Foundation of Warren County for half the cost, with the Friends providing the other half. By April 2006, Taiji reported that work had been completed except for about an hour and a half of painting. He was willing to finish painting, set up the room and help put books on the shelves. All was completed and the Friends were excited for the opening.

The Book Cellar’s Grand Opening was held on May 9, 2006, with Jane Harris as manager and Pat Buvoltz as co-manager. Volunteers were recruited to spend time manning the space. It was decided to be open two evenings per week and Saturdays. A grungy storage area was thus transformed into a sparkling, welcoming space. The spark of an idea was now a reality. As a gesture of respect to the person who proposed the original idea, a plaque has been hung with Cleo DeFiore’s name prominently displayed.

On August 2, 2006, Barb Ellingsworth became the new Book Cellar manager and she continues to manage the space today with a group of very capable volunteers as pictured.

Hours for the Book Cellar are Tuesday from 5 to 7:30 p.m., Thursday, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Thursday, 5 to 7:30 p.m., and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. During its 10 years of operation, the Book Cellar has raised over $43,000 for the Warren Public Library. At the celebration, there will be snacks, a free book and bookmark, plus a brown bag of anything in stock for $5.

Starting at $3.50/week.
