Kinzua Point Information Center sees new life

A joint effort between the Allegheny National Forest and the Warren County Visitors Bureau continues to breathe new life into the Kinzua Point Information Center.

WCVB Executive Director Dave Sherman told the Council of Governments on Wednesday night, in a meeting held at ANF headquarters, that 800 visitors have stopped at the site which is open from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on weekends and situated on Rt. 59 past the Kinzua Dam so far during this summer season.

That 800 included 388 over the Saturday, Sunday and Monday of the 4th of July holiday weekend.

Why is those numbers significant?

800 people is as many people that stopped at the site all of last summer.

“It shows the growth that is happening up there,” Sherman said, explaining that the KPIC was first staffed by volunteers two years ago on Saturdays only. That was then expanded last year to include a “small stipend” for volunteers.

“This year (we were) able to bump that up,” Sherman said. “We’ve heard nothing but great things so far.”

He said they continue to stock the center with material and information that is repeatedly depleted based on the increased use.

“That’s great for the county,” he said, thanking the Allegheny National Forest for the “relationship we have over that building. (I) hope that relationship continues.”

“Thank you for what you guys do,” Bradford District Ranger Rich Hatfield said to Sherman.

The ANF and WCVB entered into a partnership agreement in 2014 regarding the site.

Starting at $3.50/week.
