Reunion this weekend
Warren Area High School Class of 1964 will have its 50-year reunion this weekend, starting today. Today’s schedule includes a tour of Beaty-Warren Middle School at 1 p.m. and a tour of Warren Area High School at 2:30 p.m. Members of the class plan to attend the Quinn Smith exhibit at the Warren Public Library beginning at 8 p.m., and a mixer will be held at the Conewango Club from 6 to 11 p.m. (wich a cash bar). Members of the Classes of 1963 and 1965 are invited.
On Saturday, there will be kayaking on the Allegheny River at 9:30 a.m. (meet at Point Park), golfing at the Conewango Valley Country Club at 10 a.m. and hiking at Hearts Content at 10 a.m. (meet in the back parking lot of Warren Holiday Inn). A social gathering is planned at the Eagles Club, Pennsylvania Ave. E., Warren, at 1 p.m. with a “Brigadoon Jam” at 2 p.m. A dinner dance also will be held from 5 to 11 p.m. Saturday at the Conewango Valley Country Club.
Sunday, a buffet brunch is planned at 11 a.m. at Jackson Valley Country Club.

Pancakes at The Crossing
A free pancake and sausage breakfast will be served at The Crossing, 350 Pennsylvania Ave. W., Warren, from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 30. Everyone is welcome.
Atkins reunion held
The 54th annual C. L. Atkins reunion was held Aug. 9 at Larimer Park, Russell, with 37 attending. The oldest was Audrey Cable. Jeffrey Owen traveled farthest. Ashley Stearns was youngest. Reports were given; Debbie Tuller gave the treasurer’s report. Janis Wall gave the history report; there were two marriages and five deaths in 2013.
Next year’s reunion will be in care of the Henrietta Decker family and the Blackmer families.

There will be no bridge play Monday, Labor Day. Play will resume Sept. 8.

Warren County Fire Services personnel are NOT needed for traffic control at the Tidioute turkey party Sunday as was reported in a brief earlier this week. The Allegheny Community Center will have its annual Betts Park Picnic at 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 29. The public is invited for picnic fun and relaxation. Free books for teachers
and non-profits
Teachers and non-profit organizations in Warren County are eligible to apply for free books from Hooked on Books for Kids of Erie if 70 percent of the students in their school or 70 percent of the children they serve qualify as economically underprivileged. Teachers may distribute these books to pupils in their classes; non-profits may distribute them to children and/or youth in their organizations between the ages of birth and 18. Hooked on Books, a non-profit organization dedicated to literacy, has been granted 40,000 brand new books by First Book of Washington, D.C., and will distribute the books, published by Disney/Hyperion, on Oct. 11 at the Shred-X Warehouse, 2952 West 22nd St., Erie from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. To quality, teachers and non-profits must register with First Book on or before Sept. 15. Registrants will be notified by email of their time slot for selecting books, depending on when they registered. Fairgrounds

The Warren County Fairgrounds in Pittsfield invites the public to join the Labor Day camping weekend. This will be the last chance this year. Several campsites are available from Aug. 28-31 for only $25 a night. This includes water, electric, garbage and dumping station. There are restroom and shower facilities on the premises as well. 4-H Rotary night planned
The 52nd Annual Rotary 4-H Achievement Night will be held Thursday, Nov. 6, at the 4-H Center in Pittsfield. Warren County 4-H members and volunteers will be honored for their achievements. The evening will also include the annual meeting for the Penn State Extension Board in Warren County. All members and volunteers are encouraged to apply for awards that relate to their leadership and project skill development. Many of the award applications can be found online at extension.psu.edu/4-h/counties/warren/volunteers. The deadline to submit applications will be Sept. 15 and is quickly approaching. Museum plans event
The Wilder Museum of Warren County History, 51 Erie Ave., Irvine is “Just Warming Up!” On Thursday, Sept. 18, from 5 to 7 p.m., the Wilder Museum will once again serve up the “Best Chicken BBQ You Will Ever Have!” Tickets will be $10 presale or $12 at the door. Audition for Spamalot
Auditions for Warren Players, “Spamalot” will be at the Struthers Library Theatre on Sunday, Aug. 31, at 2 p.m. and on Tuesday, Sept. 2, at 6:30 p.m. with call backs on Wednesday, Sept. 3, at 6:30 p.m. Coordinators will cast a minimum of 12 men and seven women, but more are welcome. Auditions are open to those in grade nine and older. Audition packets will be available beginning Aug. 15 at the theater Monday through Friday between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Show dates will be Oct. 23 to 26. This show will be directed by Paula Roney. Monty Pythons’ “Spamalot” is a musical comedy adapted from the 1975 film “Monty Python and the Holy Grail.” The book and lyrics were written by Eric Idle, who also wrote the music in collaboration with John Du Prez and Neil Innes. This is a highly irreverent parody of the Authurian Legend and will be rated PG-13.

Culps honored
Pastor Ralph and Mary Culp are retiring from ministry at the end of August, and will return to their home in Warren. “G & S Helping Hands” (formerly known as United Methodist Women’s Group of Grand Valley and Sanford churches) will host a farewell open house for them at Grand Valley Volunteer Fire Department on Saturday, Aug. 16, from 2 to 5 p.m. Snacks, beverages and dessert will be served. Everyone who wants to celebrate the many years the Culps have served the local communities is welcome to attend. Any assistance community members want to give the group in preparing refreshments would be appreciated; the group will meet at Grand Valley United Methodist Church on Friday, Aug. 15, beginning at 1 p.m. The fire hall is on Route 27 in the middle of Grand Valley.

AOC on the move
On Sunday, Aug. 10, the Allegheny Outdoor Club (AOC) will ride bikes on the Little Toby Trail from Ridgway to Brockway and back for a round-trip total of 36 miles. Participants will meet at Howe’s True Value on Rte. 6 at 1 p.m. or at the trailhead in Ridgway at 2 p.m. For more information, call Dennis Anderson at (716) 969-9772.
On Wednesday, Aug. 13, the AOC will ride bikes in the Scandia area. Participants will meet at the Russell Post Office at 5:30 p.m., then shuttle bikes to Scandia, then ride Scandia Road to Hatch Run and back to Russell via Big Four Road. For more information, call Pat Spicer at 757-8331.
On Tuesday Aug. 19, the AOC will do trail maintenance on the Toms Run Trail on the Allegheny National Forest. Monday Night Movies at the Warren Public Library will continue Aug. 11. This free event will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the Slater Room on the third floor of the library. Complimentary popcorn will be available. This week’s PG-13 rated, 140 minute film stars Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Kate Winslet, Ansel Elgort, Ray Stevenson and Miles Teller. In a world where the population is divided into factions by personality types, Tris Prior is classified as Divergent. When she uncovers a conspiracy to eliminate all Divergents, she teams with the mysterious Four to find out what makes the powers-that-be so frightened of them. Kate Winslet also stars in this action thriller adapted from the novel by Veronica Roth, and directed by Neil Burger.
