Jaryd Shield, son of Tim and Cyndi Shield, graduated cum laude with a bachelor of arts degree in political science, a minor in administration of justice and two certificates in global studies and Latin American studies from the University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh. Since his sophomore year, Shield has been a member and founding father of the Delta Upsilon chapter of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity, which is now the largest fraternity at Pitt. For four months during the spring semester of his junior year, he studied abroad in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Olivia Lorraine Hill-Pollock, a senior at Warren Area High School, has been accepted for the Physician Assistant Program this fall at Pennsylvania College of Technology in Williamsport. Olivia is the daughter of Lucy Hill and Tracy and Barb Pollock.

Chelsea M. Dunn, daughter of Wil and Lesa Dunn, Sheffield, graduated May 22 with a doctorate of optometry degree from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry (PCO) at Salus University in Philadelphia. Dr. Dunn received both clinical and academic honors while at Salus. She was elected as a member of Beta Sigma Kappa International Optometry Honor Society and was chosen by the faculty of PCO for clinical excellence in both primary care and neuro-ophthalmic specialty for “demonstrating outstanding clinical skills, sensitivity and concern for individual patients and for rendering comprehensive health care in a manner commensurate with the principles and methods of Optometry.”
Dr. Dunn completed numerous clinical rotations while attending Salus with concentrations in neuro-ophthalmic disease at The Eye Institute in Philadelphia; advanced corneal cases and specialty contact lens fits at Optometric Inc. in Pittsburgh; ocular and systemic disease at the Veterans Hospital in White River Junction, Vermont; comprehensive ophthalmic care including advanced neurologic, glaucoma and diabetic cases as well as pre- and post-operative oculo-plastic, cataract and refractive care at the Elk County Eye Clinic in St. Marys; and ocular and systemic disease, pre- and post-operative management, examination of burn victims with facial involvement in the burn unit and screening of premature babies for retinopathy of prematurity in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh.
Dr. Dunn received clinical honors at each of the five above mentioned rotations as well as all three of her rotations in primary care at PCO.
Professional memberships include the American Optometric Student Association, National Optometric Student Association, College of Optometrists in Vision Development, Private Practice Club, and Pennsylvania Optometric Student Association for which she was a founding executive board member and served as the activities chair. Additionally, she participated in the Congressional Advocacy Conference in Washington, D.C., in April of 2012. Dr. Dunn was also a member of the Student Optometric Service to Humanity where she completed more than 85 hours of volunteer work as well as traveled to El Salvador in August of 2012 where she participated in ocular health examinations at four different under-served villages providing care for more than 650 individuals. She also participated in Give Kids Sight Day with the Philadelphia Eagles at the Wills Eye Institute in Philadelphia and was an Optics and Clinical Procedures Lab tutor at PCO.
In April 2014, Dr. Dunn had a case report on the subject of “Bilateral Abduction Deficit Secondary to Influenza” accepted for presentation at the 2014 Optometry’s Meeting at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia. This work will be published following its debut presentation in Philadelphia at the end of June 2014.
Dr. Dunn has accepted a position at the Elk County Eye Clinic in St. Marys.

Sarah Bowley graduated magna cum laude from Gannon University on May 10 with a bachelor of science degree in health science. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree in physician assistant science from Gannon. Bowley is a 2010 graduate of Sheffield Area High School and the daughter of Craig and Cindy Bowley of Barnes.

Angela R. Shick, Pharm.D. from Warren, earned a doctor of pharmacy degree from the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine School of Pharmacy on June 1. Dr. Shick was one of the recipients of the School of Pharmacy Academic Achievement Award which is given to members of the graduating class who have demonstrated consistent outstanding academic performance, leadership and professionalism throughout the program.

Tara Shattuck, a 2010 graduate of Warren Area High School, graduated from the Pennsylvania State University, University Park, on May 10 with a bachelor of science degree in nutritional sciences and a minor in dance. While earning her degree, Shattuck pursued several involvements in order to increase her healthcare experience. She worked part time as a pharmacy technician at CVS/Pharmacy in State College each semester, as well as in Warren on winter and summer breaks. She volunteered as a student dietitian at Dr. Barclay’s Camp for Children with Diabetes for a week in July 2012. Shattuck earned course credit as a teaching assistant for Introductory Principles of Nutrition and earned course credit as an undergraduate research assistant for a clinical research study investigating the effect of polyphenolic-rich dark chocolate and almonds on cardiovascular disease risk factors.
Shattuck remained active on campus throughout her four years at Penn State. She volunteered for the Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon (THON) each year, as a Rules and Regulations Committee Member her freshman year, a Morale Committee Member her sophomore and junior years, and an Entertainment Captain/Family Relations Liaison her senior year. She was also a member of “Peace. Love. Lyrical. Dance Company” her junior and senior years, which gave her the opportunity to perform at Walt Disney World in March 2014.
In the fall of 2012, Shattuck obtained ServSafe certification by completing the ServSafe Food Protection Manager Certification Examination. In the spring of 2013, she was inducted into the National Society of Leadership and Success, Sigma Alpha Pi, for her leadership experiences and high GPA. She was also a member of the Student Nutrition Association throughout college and is currently a student member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. She obtained dean’s list almost every semester while attending Penn State.
Shattuck has been matched to attend the Penn State Dietetic Internship in Hershey where she will complete graduate courses and 1200 hours of supervised practice. Completion of the program will deem her eligible to write the CDR registration examination for dietitians. She plans to work as a registered dietitian upon passing the examination.

Julie Price graduated summa cum laude on May 17 from Messiah College in Grantham with a degree in sustainability studies with a concentration in community development and a minor in nutrition. Brendan Scott Lyle graduated magna cum laude from Mercyhurst University on May 18 with a bachelor of arts degree in intelligence studies with a double minor in political science and Asian studies. While at Mercyhurst, Lyle had an internship with the Defense Department and is working on a project as a research analyst for McManis and Monsalve Associates in Erie. Projects that he worked on at Mercyhurst included a Strategic Intelligence Project for Internet Crimes Group, a Tim Horton’s Competitive Intelligence Study, and a Middle East Security Study.
Honors and awards Lyle received at Mercyhurst include deans’ list, Phi Eta Sigma Honors Society, Mercyhurst’s Egan Scholarship, Mercyhurst’s Presidential Scholarship, Mercyhurst’s Political Science Department Commendations, Gamma Sigma Chapter of Phi Sigma Iota: International Foreign Language Honor Society, and the Leadership Certification Program/Sigma Alpha Pi Honors Society.
While at Mercyhurst, Lyle was a member of clubs and organizations including Mercyhurst’s Ambassadors, the Strategic and Competitive Intelligence Professionals Mercyhurst Chapter, the Cyber Threat Research Analyst Club, and the Competitive Intelligence Club. Lyle served as a Laker Leader, was a Campus Ministry Student Leader, as well as a volunteer for Christmas on Campus.
Lyle plans to earn his masters’ degree in international relations at Pitt University starting in January 2015. Lyle, a 2010 graduate of Warren Area High School, is the son of Gregory and Pamela Bonace Lyle.
