DEP considering permit for gas-fired boiler at refinery

The state Department of Environmental Protection is considering the issuance of a permit for the installation of gas-fired boiler by United Refining Company.

According to a legal notice published in Thursday’s Times Observer, the proposal addresses the boiler planned for URC’s facility at 15 Bradley St. on the city’s east side.

DEP has indicated that they plan to approve an administrative amendment to the company’s operating permit to approve this installation.

The notice states that the boiler “will be used to provide additional steam producing capacity to the existing refinery operations.”

A public comment period has been opened and those interested in commenting are, per the notice, to contact Eric Gustafson, Regional Air Quality Manager with DEP’s Meadville office.

“A public hearing,” the notice states, “may be held, if the Department of Environmental Protection, in its discretion, decides that such a hearing is warranted on the comments received during the public comment period.”
