Officials developing broadband strategies

The Warren County Commissioners would like to lead the way to bring broadband to underserved portions of the county.

Commissioner Jeff Eggleston said at this week’s work session the County Commissioners Association of Pennsylvania is “trying to make a push with the state legislature” for legislation on broadband expansion.

He suggested using “Warren County as a spot (for) a pilot, showing the challenges we’re having.”

Eggleston said he will be meeting with Youngsville TV in addition to other conversations he’d like to have with other providers to see work has been done in this space. He also said a consultant could be brought in on this issue.

Commissioner Ben Kafferlin said he is “about ready to put it into a task force.”

“Anything we would do this year would be in anticipation of next year or the year after,” Eggleston suggested.

Kafferlin agreed, noting that any grant the county pursued would not be ready for implementation this year.

Eggleston said there are grants – both federal and state – as well as private funding available to address broadband challenges but “(you) have to show them you have your stuff together. If you can do that with detail, (we) should be able to make a good push.”

“We have several patches that have absolutely no coverage at all,” he added. “I think we could very easily just by putting something together here – (we) already have radio towers – (we) just have to find a way to tap into them.”
