Philomel

Club performance

The Philomel Club of Warren hosted its November performance at the Woman’s Club of Warren on Nov. 10. Christine Kuntz provided a brief introduction to the life and music of Aram Khachaturian, a 20th century Russian composer whose Armenian ancestry is a notable common theme in his composition. She then played his famous waltz, the Masquerade Waltz transcribed for piano. This piece was originally conceived as Incidental Music for the Mikhail Lermontov play title Masquerade. Continuing the Russian theme, Kuntz then played Romance Opus 5 by Pyotr Tchaikovsky. This Romance is a musical documentary of Tchaikovsky’s failed romance with opera star DÈsirÈe Art≥t. Deena Winters, one of the Club’s newest members, began with the harmonically complex and intricate Polonaise-Fantaisie in A-flat major, Opus 61 by FrÈdÈric Chopin. She then played the Prelude and Fugue in F minor by Johann Sebastian Bach. She finished with the moody and emotional Mumuki, by the famed Argentinian tango composer and bandoneon player Astor Piazzolla. The Philomel Club will meet on Dec. 15 at 1:30 p.m. at the Woman’s Club of Warren. Those interested in joining are welcome to join our December meeting, listen to stirring Christmas melodies, and meet the club members. Not a musician? No worries. There are no performance obligations and you simply can enjoy the music.
