The Roger Tory Peterson Institute will open their next exhibition of original artwork on Friday, Nov. 6. Entitled “From Field to Frame,” the exhibit features bird paintings by artist Michael DiGiorgio of Madison, CT. DiGiorgio has a connection to RTPI, not only because he knew Roger Tory Peterson, but also because of his contributions to the Peterson Field Guide to Birds of North America. Under the direction of Lisa White, Executive Editor at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, the publisher of the Peterson Field Guide Series, he was responsible for the digital enhancements of the art as well as the digital layout of the plates for the book.

DiGiorgio’s paintings and drawings have appeared in a variety of nature books and journals, such as Birds of Brazil, Volume 1 & 2 (Wildlife Conservation Society), Birds of South America Volume III, by Robert Ridgely, Birds of Honduras, Breeding Bird Atlas of Connecticut, Master’s Guide to Birding, Peterson Field Guide to Birds of North America, Audubon Field Guide to Birds/Eastern and Western region, Bird Watcher’s Digest, The Young Birder’s Guide to Birds of North America, Sanctuary (Massachusetts Audubon Magazine), Audubon Magazine, and The Narrow Edge, by Deborah Cramer (Life history of Red Knots).

On the advice of his friend and mentor, the late Don Eckelberry, DiGiorgio has been painting and sketching birds from life since early in his career. He has traveled to the British Isles, West Indies and South America to sketch and paint tropical bird and plant life. He has also traveled throughout the United States recording American birds. He won the first ever endowment award from the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia for recognition of his Bird Illustration work. This award was given in memory of Don Eckelberry.

There will be an opening reception with the artist on Friday, Nov. 6, at 7 p.m. This event is free and open to the public. For more information about Michael DiGiorgio visit www.mdigiorgio.com. RTPI is located at 311 Curtis St., Jamestown.
