A Great Season
Warren Concert Association (WCA) will kick off its new season with a concert by “Mainstreet Brass” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, at Warren First Presbyterian Church. The musicians of this quintet are a finely blended ensemble, entertaining and educating with their instrumental repertoire full of musical surprises. A German Baroque sonata or a rendition of “Wooly Bully?” How about both? That’s how Kevin and Donald and Shari and Bryan and Allen mix it up to make their concerts a memorable experience for the audience. Their contagious stage energy is also shared on their CD recordings, both of which were recorded in a Philadelphia Presbyterian church. That makes Mainstreet Brass the perfect ensemble to perform the first-ever WCA concert at Warren’s First Presbyterian Church.
The next concert will be the “DePue Brothers Grassical Christmas” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 12, at the Struthers Library Theatre. This non-stop celebration with traditional holiday favorites and original tunes provides a kaleidoscope of holiday music for everyone. Bluegrass meets rock, meets renaissance, meets jazz, meets classical with brothers and violin virtuosi Alex, Wallace, and Jason DePue; award-winning banjo player, Mike Munford; PhilOrch principal timpanist/percussionist Don Liuzzi; and jazz bass great, Kevin MacConnell. This is the second time for the DePue crew to take the stage at the Library Theatre. The public is invited to this entertaining holiday show sponsored by Northwest Savings Bank.
The series will continue on April 9, 2016, with “EVA” at the Struthers Library Theatre at 7:30 p.m. Three contemporary singers/songwriters, Americans Liz Simmons and Nicole Zuraitis and Australian Kath Buckel are EVA. With international roots and skillful musicianship, they blend hauntingly lovely renditions of traditional and contemporary folk music and improvisation from the roots of Irish, Australian, and American music. Stunning three-part harmonies and the melodic landscape of acoustic instrumentation draws the audience into an experience, transending the musical history of three continents with shared songs and stories that influence and enrich one another.
The final concert of the series will be “Sybarite5” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 30, 2016, at the Struthers Library Theatre. This talented and congenial string quintet excels at the exquisite, pushing the envelope of concert music. Individually, they are virtuosos; as a group they meld seamlessly. They could thrill listeners with Schubert or Dvorak, and no doubt they have. But they also engage listeners in unique ways, effectively bridging the old and the modern, the stuffy and the popular. From Mozart to Radiohead and Visconti to Akiho, Sybarite5’s eclectic repertoire and commanding performance style is turning heads throughout the music world.
In addition to the performances hosted by the Warren Concert Association, a season subscription allows patrons to attend all of the concerts of the Jamestown Concert Association. Visit the WCA website for the Jamestown schedule.
