Rounding Third: Watch out for the credit card sharks

Last Friday, when the phone rang, the caller I.D. read Barclay Bank. Uh-oh. That’s not good. Barclay Bank is synonymous with only one thing for me – my MasterCard. The only time any credit card company has ever called on the phone was to inform me of fraudulent activity. The last time that happened, I was visiting New York City. My best friend had treated me to a delightful theater matinee. Returning to the parking garage, I handed my charge card to the attendant for their exorbitant fee. Ginger and I chatted while he took my card to the office for the transaction. I never ...

View from Hickory Height: The people, recipes of my life

Today I am thinking of my mother-in-law. I am not sure why, but I am. Both my mother and mother-in-law died just before Christmas. For several years we lived on the farm in a trailer. She let me have a section of her freezer to keep my grocery things. I also used her cellar for my canned goods. I learned many things from my mother-in-law. She was my go-to person when it came to canning. I also learned some recipes from her. She was a great cook. In the days when Dick and I were dating, I traveled almost every weekend to Russell. I was teaching in Kenmore, NY. Dick of course, lived on ...

Areas impacted believe district dodging questions

For nearly 90 days, Superintendent Gary Weber and the administration of the Warren County School District have been dodging questions and right to know inquiries to a number of subjects. Apparently the less the public knows the better off they shall all be and we’re supposed to take the ...

Are safety issues being considered?

As the vote draws closer, with how the district has simply not discussed the distractions to the students of the district, one has to wonder if the district simply overlooked this aspect or did not think about what distractions might be caused by the plan to close Youngsville High School? Are there other aspects that the district has not adequately addressed, thought about, or discussed with the communities? What about the students’ safety? The district claims that students safety is top priority but nothing has been done to address the safety concerns with this proposition. The ...

Energy policy in nation needs some rethinking

Winston Churchill observed: “Americans will always do the right thing… right after they have tried everything else”. Hopefully America (and New York state) will do the right thing with respect to energy policy where we have failed abysmally so far. Instead of an energy policy, America has a carbon prohibition policy that mandates impossible Net Zero carbon goals, but ignores future energy needs. By 2050 America’s electricity demand will double, and world-wide demand will quadruple, but there is no energy unicorn waiting in the wings to save us from the Alice-in-Wonderland ...

Table full of memories

As we sat in my kitchen on Christmas Eve, I realized that we were making memories. This was the Christmas when my daughter-in-law was with her ailing father. This was the Christmas that my granddaughter could not make it home because of her work commitment. The table that we sat around used to be in my great-grandfather’s home. It became mine years ago. One time when we were putting in the extra leaves, we discovered what I think is a date. We found a date in the 1870s. I am not positive that this is the date that it was manufactured, but if not, I know it is old. My ...
