Warren’s Adams ties meet record in 100, Warren County’s top track and field athletes dazzle at annual event
Despite having to battle through poor weather conditions, it was a banner day for county athletes at the annual Warren County Track Meet Thursday.
Warren’s Kyle Adams tied the meet record in the 100, set by Kalil Slaughter in 2011, on his way to being named Outstanding Male Track Athlete. Youngsville’s Jake Hogg broke his own school record in the high jump, set at the District 10 meet last year, by clearing 6 feet, 5 inches. That these marks were set during intermittent periods of heavy rain made them all the more impressive.
The meet featured a number of new district qualifiers as well.
Eisenhower’s Cyrus Hazeltine qualified in the high jump, while teammate Lydia Giannini will compete in the discus. Warren’s Graham Carr qualified in the 3200.
“This is probably the most enjoyable county meet I have ever coached in,” Warren coach Kevin Dustin said. “We knew we had a potential weather issue today and all the county coaches came together to do what was best for the kids. Finally seeing us all working together toward what is most important (the kids) was just great to see.”
Youngsville’s Naomi Swartzbaugh and Warren’s Lydia Latimer shared the Outstanding Female Track Athlete, while Giannini earned Outstanding Female Field Athlete honors. Swartzbaugh took first in the 100 and 300 hurdles and finished second in the 100 meter dash. Latimer won the high jump and 400 and was part of the first place 4×400 relay team. Giannini took first in the shot put and discus. Warren’s Kyleigh Wilson was the only other dual winner for the girls. She took first in the 100 and 200 and finished second in the long jump.
Eisenhower’s Joey Bauer unseated Hogg as the Outstanding Male Field Athlete. Bauer swept the throwing events and finished third in the high jump. Hogg won the high jump and finished second in both the long and triple jump.
Adams also took first in the 200 and triple jump and was part of the winning 4×100 relay team.
Warren won both team titles. The girls finished with 126 points, followed by Eisenhower (67), Youngsville (39.5) and Sheffield (13.5). The boys had 119 points followed by Eisenhower (75), Youngsville (40) and Sheffield (24).
Sheffield is scheduled to compete in the Northern Tier League Meet at Port Allegany today. Eisenhower, Warren and Youngsville now turn their attention to the District 10 meet next Saturday at Slippery Rock University.
“It was a great meet,” Dustin said. “Now we are getting ready for districts.”
