Sheffield volleyball battles against St. Marys

ST. MARYS – The Sheffield Lady Wolverines battled at St. Marys on Thursday, taking a set from the Lady Dutch in what was ultimately a 3-1 defeat, 25-27, 25-19, 22-25, 11-25.

It was another positive step for a team that has grown by leaps and bounds during the 2018 season.

“The girls played hard and competed in the first 3 games with good serving and defense,” said Sheffield coach Melissa Lemay.

“We still need to work on converting our attacks into kills. We need to play more with our eyes to avoid being blocked and find the open floor.”

Leading Sheffield were Callen Copley, who played a consistent game with 12 service points, 5 aces, and 7 digs, as well as Emily Leichtenberger 9 kills, 6 digs, Megan Johnson 19 assists, 16 digs, Marissa Grubbs 12 digs, Annabel Sheldon 10 digs and Lynzie Grubbs 4 blocks.

“In the fourth set, we were a little more flat, playing on our heels and not making the plays we had made earlier in the night.”

Sheffield returns to action on Saturday at the Kane Invitational, which also features fellow Warren County schools Eisenhower and Youngsville.
