Dominant: Lobdell no-hits Franklin in Lady Dragons’ extra-inning victory
Ellie Lobdell no-hit Franklin in a 7-0 win on Saturday, striking out 15.
FRANKLIN – Warren and Franklin split two games last season in an example of how good District 10 Region 6 softball is.
This time around, the pitchers showed just how good they can be.
Warren’s Ellie Lobdell and Franklin’s Gracie Stryffler hooked up in a pitcher’s duel Saturday in Franklin, and it wasn’t until fireworks in the ninth inning picked up Ellie for the no-hit win.
Lobdell would strike out 15 and walk three, and didn’t allow a hit in nine innings. In fact, no baserunners reached third base in the contest for Franklin.
But through eight, Warren had not scored, with Stryffler allowing just one hit to that point. That hit was a triple by Lex Nyquist to start the top of the fourth inning. But a pop out, a failed squeeze bunt attempt for a strike, and two strikeouts left her stranded.
Warren catcher Grace Wortman started the ninth off with the team’s second hit and would later add another as the Dragons chased Stryffler with seven hits in the inning.
Julia Lobdell bunted between the pitcher and first baseman for another hit and Nyquist walked, Stryffler’s only walk, to load the bases with no one out. With one out, Celia Chase flared a base hit to center to score the game’s first run. Then, Gracie Wood hit a sacrifice fly to center field for an insurance run, scoring Julia Lobdell.
With two outs, Kiersten Hoffman ripped a single into the left-center field gap to score Nyquist and Chase. Ellie Lobdell and Jordan Sitler followed with RBI singles before Wortman’s second hit of the inning to left field scored two.
Stryffler finished with 16 strikeouts in 8 2/3 innings.
Wortman, who was 2-for-4 with two RBI for Warren (5-1 overall and 4-1 in region), threw out the only potential basestealer for Franklin.
“Ellie did what Ellie is capable of,” said Warren coach Jon Sitler, whose Dragons host another region opponent, Titusville, on Monday. “What I am most proud of is she got stronger as the game went on, hit her spots, kept her composure on several close pitches, and fielded her position well.
“Franklin’s Stryffler was pitching her game as well, so I’m proud of our hitters for adjusting,” said Sitler. “It came later than we wanted, but we picked each other up at the end. Grace, Julia, Lex, Celia, Gracie (with a sac fly on an 0-2 count), Kiersten, Ellie, and Jordan had great at bats that inning. Morgan Munksgard also had an important moment, going from first to third on Jordan’s single to left-center field, drawing the throw that allowed Jordan to get to second. Wortman followed with a two-run single.
“When Franklin did put the ball in play, we were on our toes and made the plays defensively,” said Sitler.
